Soundgarden set to reform after 12-year hiatus

Soundgarden look set to reform after a 12-year hiatus.

The US rockers, who disbanded in 1997 following tensions in the band have put an announcement on their website, Soundgardenworld.com, suggesting that they are set to gear up again soon.

"The 12 year break is over and school is back in session," the message read. Frontman Chris Cornell added on his Twitter page, Twitter.com/chriscornell: "Knights of the Soundtable ride again!"

Members of Soundgarden have played together since the disbandment, but Cornell has previously said that they wouldn’t consider any reunion a full reformation unless all the original members were involved.

"When Soundgarden broke up, my discussions with the rest of the band was 'We have to have an agreement that we will never tour Soundgarden – Soundgarden will never exist – without it being a unanimous decision and that everyone who was in the band is in the band'," he told NME.COM.

The band members are yet to reveal what their reunion will entail.

Two words-this kicks ass. (I added an extra word because it needed it). I had read about this a few weeks ago, that an annoucement was coming, so this is great news.

This reunion is bogus because it doesn't involve Paul Rodgers!

One of the most talented of all Seattle bands and a personal favorite.

Plus, it keeps Cornell far far away from Timbaland!

Soundgarden Dig Deep for First Reunion Show

By Charles R. Cross
April 17, 2010
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news

It may have been their first time on stage together in a dozen years, but Soundgarden's reunion show on Friday dug deep into their catalog, back to their earliest, pre-grunge days. 'This is our first show in 14 years, so it's a lot of old songs,' Chris Cornell said at Seattle's Showbox. 'But it's not just songs that we stopped playing in 1998 - it's songs we stopped playing in 1990.'

True to their word, half of the 18-song set dated from 1989 or before, including 'Hunted Down,' their debut Sub Pop single. On 'Flower' and 'Beyond the Wheel,' both from 1988, you could see drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd watching their cues. If the band did seem a bit rusty on opener 'Spoonman,' it also made the night exciting: There was a sense of spontaneity that suggested anything could happen.

At several points Cornell explained that the evening, where the band played under the secret anagram 'Nudedragons,' was a 'rehearsal' for their Lollapalooza dates later this year. He threatened that if they 'screwed something up,' they would play it again. No repeats were necessary, however, and the Seattle faithful, including Eddie Vedder, sang along to every tune.

Cornell was barely out of high school when Soundgarden first formed, and at 45, he looks surprisingly boyish. Whether he was holding a mike stand over the crowd, or head banging his long hair, he appeared more comfortable onstage with Soundgarden than he has during any of his recent solo tours. His voice remains as youthful as ever, and whether intoning a deep growl on 'Fell on Black Days,' or hitting the falsetto on 'Outshined,' he was spot on.

Guitarist Kim Thayil is the oldest member of Soundgarden, at 49, and the member who had most retreated during the band's hiatus. He said nothing onstage, but his time off only emphasized his guitar god status, as he hit every solo with aplomb. He only looked tentative on a cover of the Doors 'Waiting for the Sun,' which ended the evening.

Cornell was the only band member to speak to the crowd, except for when drummer Cameron introduced Cornell. In introducing his bandmates, Cornell simply said, 'here's Matt, here's Ben, and here's Kim.' To Soundgarden's loyal Seattle fans, some of whom had followed the band from their beginnings in dive bars up the street in 1986, no further name check was needed.

Soundgarden broke up after a show in February 1997, when Shepherd threw his bass in the air before walking offstage. At the band's first show in over a decade years, Shepherd intentionally tossed his instrument again, and the band left the stage while his Fender bass was airborne. This time around it was clear to everyone - both in the crowd and in Soundgarden - that the gesture signaled a new beginning, and not an end.

Set List:

"Spoonman
"Gun"
"Searching With My Good Eye Closed"
"Rusty Cage"
"Beyond the Wheel"
"Flower"
"Ugly Truth"
"Fell on Black Days"
"Hunted Down"
"Nothing to Say"
"Loud Love"
"Blow Up The Outside World"
"Pretty Noose"
"Outshined"
"Slaves and Bulldozers"
Encore:
"Get On The Snake"
"Big Dumb Sex"
"Waiting for the Sun" (Doors Cover)

Soundgarden say they could make a new album

Soundgarden could extend their reunion to record a new album, guitarist Kim Thayil has hinted.

The Seattle rockers, who headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago last summer, reunited in April this year after breaking up in 1998.

In an interview with Canadian radio station CFNY-FM, Thayil said that the band have been demoing ideas for new songs.

"When we get together to rehearse it's natural for us... to start jamming and inventing," Thayil said. "We've come up with instrumental, and certainly on occasion, lyrical ideas. I'm not confirming anything, but it's impossible for us to get in a room and not come up with ideas."

Thayil also said that the band are readying a B-sides collection and live album to go alongside their recently-released CD/DVD retrospective set ‘Telephantasm’.

"We had a live album in the can just waiting for someone to mix it," he said. "We wanted to do a B-side album and that might be two or three albums. We'll be doing other shows and working on releasing some albums from deeper in our catalogue."

Thayil added that the rest of Soundgarden have other projects to finish before they can return to the band full-time. "The guys have other commitments," he said, "but this is the thing we're most excited about."

Since the band's break-up, singer Chris Cornell has performed with Audioslave and released three solo albums, drummer Matt Cameron has become part of Pearl Jam and bassist Ben Shepherd has been a member of Mark Lanegan's live band.

Probably my favorite band ever, or tied with Alice in Chains.

Looks like another "commitment" is right on the horizon...

Check out Chris Cornell’s “Songbook” tour this spring

This Spring, Chris Cornell will embark on his first-ever solo acoustic Songbook tour.

Running from April through May 2011, it will spotlight songs from throughout his illustrious career, as well as a few surprise covers. Within this alternative setting, Cornell can easily interact with the audience and share insights about his music. Familiar songs emerge in a new context, showing that great songwriting translates to any idiom.

Soundgarden to make new record 'very soon'

Soundgarden have confirmed that they are to record new material.

The grunge band, who reunited in January last year after a 12-year break, said they were working on new material last December.

However, this is the first time that they have definitely said they are going to record. The results are expected to form a new album.

Posting on their official website, Soundgardenworld.com, the Seattle band explained: "Over the past few months we've been busy jamming, writing and hanging out together – exploring the creative aspect of being Soundgarden. It feels great. We have some cool new songs that we are going to record very soon.”

They titled the post "Let's make a record".

Just keep Timbaland far far away, and it should be awesome.

Soundgarden's new album will feature 'updated old material'

Soundgarden's forthcoming new album is set to feature updated versions of "super-old" material.

The grunge band, who reunited in January 2010 after a 12-year break, said that recent sessions have left them with 12-14 songs that are "kind of ready to go".

Speaking to Billboard.com, drummer Matt Cameron said that although the material is "90 per cent new", the rest could be made up of updated old ideas.

"We've tried to update the super-old stuff. It doesn't sound too old and dusty and crusty to my ears - but maybe to someone else it will," he said.

"There's a little bit of evolution going on with some of this new music, but we're not straying too far from the formula. It has all our signature elements - and more. I think people are going to really love it," Cameron added.

Chris Cornell: 'Soundgarden are recording a diverse new album'

Soundgarden are in the midst of recording a "diverse" new album, according to singer Chris Cornell.

The reunited collective are hard at work on their first studio album since 1996's 'Down On The Upside', with Cornell giving fans an update in an interview with Billboard.

"We're pretty far into our record now," he said. "Every time we write a song we always take it for what it is and try to make it the most it can be. It's very diverse, I can tell you that."

As for a release date, Cornell said that the band were happy taking their time recording in his home studio in Seattle.

"We went into this with the idea that we wouldn't worry about scheduling or timing," he stated. "We would worry about making a great record. It's been a pretty fast pace, considering everything. But we're not putting any pressure on ourselves. Let the album decide when it's done."

Soundgarden: 'The last thing we want to make is a grunge record'

Soundgarden have said that their new album will be quite different from their early material.

The band have previously said in the past that their first album for 15 years will feature 'updated old material', but guitarist Kim Thayil has seemingly ruled this out, saying the band's new LP will sound quite different.

Speaking to Kerrang!, Thayil said: "We want to make sure the material excites us. The last thing we want to make is another grunge or metal record."

He added that the Seattle band want to record an album with "material that excites us."

Thayil said that there was no target release date for the album yet, only adding that the band want to record and release the album "as soon as possible", but that singer Chris Cornell's solo tour and drummer Matt Cameron's commitments with Pearl Jam have to come first.

He said: "Everything is contingent on the primary careers of the band. Everyone wants the album to come out as soon as possible, but at the moment, there's no reason to rush anything."

Thayil also said the band would be likely to tour the new album when it is released.

Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell on the Band’s New Tour and Coming Album

By John Jurgensen
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/07/ ... ing-album/

Image

The list of unlikely rock reunions that have flourished in recent years—Pixies, Pavement, Guided By Voices—prove that most fans need only be patient until their nostalgia wishlists are fulfilled. Soundgarden seemed to prove that rule by reuniting for Lollapalooza 2010 after breaking up 12 years before. Since then, a group that helped embody the Seattle grunge boom, has recorded a new album (title and release date to be determined). Singer Chris Cornell, whose piercing warrior howl ranks with that of AC/DC’s Bon Scott in the annals of hard rock, called in for an interview ahead of a tour that brings Soundgarden through the New York area this weekend.

Soundgarden wasn’t just a band, it was a business. What was the most challenging thing about getting that machinery running again?

I suppose there’s some catching up with ways of doing things and communicating with fans and getting the news out. In the 12 years or so we had off that stuff got easier. But we were also a band with a manager and a record label and a catalog department that was fully operational, but basically nobody was doing any of that. For us that was the biggest issue. I’ve always had a strong work ethic but it’s easy to get swept away by writing songs and playing shows, as opposed to sitting at meetings around giant tables in rooms that are over-air conditioned.

It’s been more than a year since you reunited in Chicago. What have you learned since then about playing together again?

Since then we’ve written an entire new album. That was pretty interesting. Once we were in a room working on new arrangements, that 12 years apart was erased.

Was it hard to take the step from playing old songs to actually writing new material?

It’s like wearing two very different hats. Rehearsing for a show after 12 years off, there’s less tension surrounding that. You know it’s do-able. The songs are on a list somewhere. Writing a new album, that’s when the individual relationships come into play. In that regard we’ve always been a really great band. Everybody supports everyone’s ideas. But there are still question marks in writing new music. What’s it mean? Who are we now? Hopefully the answers are in the songs.

After going solo, you experimented with different styles, from acoustic arrangements to the electronic stuff you did with Timbaland. Do you feel like hard rock is your natural state?

I don’t think I’d say that. Playing music is my natural state and within that I’m trying to experiment with what’s possible and what makes sense. I always felt like Soundgarden as a band should be able to include any element. When I wrote “Black Hole Sun,” I was afraid to play it for the guys because I didn’t think they would like it. We can do almost anything but “Black Hole Sun” won a Grammy for best heavy metal performance. So the lines get blurred, but that’s a fun thing to do.

It was hard to really classify Soundgarden. You were more amorphous than some of your peers.

There’s positives and negatives to it. We were the one band that couldn’t be easily imitated because there was no simple jumping off point. It was a great thing because it kept autonomy. But I suppose in terms of marketability it’s been a bit of a struggle because we couldn’t easily be explained.

Can you give me an example of what the new music sounds like?

I’m really happy with it. I understand the feeling of the album. It’s very true to form for Soundgarden yet you can’t compare it to anything else.

How does writing, playing heavy, aggressive music in your forties compare to doing it in your teens and twenties?

I don’t feel like the source has changed. In some ways as people get older they might have convictions that change but ultimately they may be more open-minded about everything. That’s part of being an adult and getting older. I don’t think music necessarily is affected by that. For me it’s important that the lyrics are borne of the feeling of the music. I don’t get in there and create a character. It’s more of a voice that I hear living inside the music.

What was it like to finally get in the same room together? Did anything happen in the 1990s that required apologies?

There was nothing like that. It was just five minutes of awkwardness. Then you start talking about what’s going on now and what you remember. We spent years and years traveling around together, so there are some pretty incredible stories.

Your voice was one of the most distinctive aspects of Soundgarden. How has it changed?

I never really stopped adjusting in terms of singing the old songs. Any of the hard parts for me are still hard when singing live. The thing that I like now is that we have the opportunity not just to rise to former glory, but to explore what these songs can do live. I never stopped thinking if there was a better way to approach it. It’s a moving target. And these songs have their own lives.

What was your hair strategy going into this tour. Short or long?

I don’t ever think about that much.

Well, you have to decide when to get a haircut, don’t you?

Not really. I don’t really have to do that. That’s one obvious 100% sure benefit of being a musician for a living is that I don’t have to think about that. I’ve never worn a watch or a tie and it doesn’t really matter what happens with my hair arrangement.
