On Rhino handmade, a bit late, but better late than never given the upheaval at Rhino this year.

Recorded mainly in Ireland in 1992 but shelved.
Rod's first all covers album.
All the songs have come out since then (between 1993 and 1995) but in different mixes.

Good start to the year, hopefully followed by the Blondes and Footloose collector's editions

Two bonus tracks - one alternative version and one "making-of" track about 19 minutes long.
And liner note actually written by a fan rather than a hack!

Partly. The five new songs on Lead Vocalist are on Once in a blue moon (where they were originally planned to appear). Different mixes this time around.

Lead Vocalist was an appalling concept (good as the new songs were) and a complete rip off for fans.
Even the liner notes by Rod in the original were a blatant lie about how it was conceived.
It was clearly an attempt to cash in on Rod getting a BRIT award in Feb 1993 without having the full album ready to go.

And I don't for one moment believe the offical line that OIABM was shelved because of Unplugged - it either wasn't ready or someone (Warner or Rod?) decided it was not good enough / finished in time. They then decided to put out some of it,as I said, to make some easy cash.
The fact that it never came out in the US is telling in itself.

It's a good album. Had it come out as planned, I am certain the vast majority of Rod Stewart fans would have loved it. I think it's by far the best covers album he's ever made. including Soulbook. The reason for its quality of course is that he was still very much involved in the process, unlike today. (I swear by 2014 he will be telling the Entertainment reporters he literally phones in the vocals from a yacht OR he's gonna say engineers have taken previous recordings and made an entire album of new songs!).

It's also a great package. Rhino is releasing it in the long box format (how 90s). Can't say too much more til Rhino puts out a little more info so I am sure I am not saying something I am not supposed to.

Jan. 14 is a Thursday, unusual release day for a new CD. Unless he cut a deal with one of the big retailers.

The Tuesday release dates are quickly becoming a thing of the past. I track release dates for a work project, and I've found that within the last year, and certainly within the last four months, more and more are being released on Mondays and Fridays (whether or not retail deals were cut).

This is a Rhino Handmade product, for sale online only. Presumably limited enough edition - they're probably not too worried about the chart week (actually, given that you can't even pre-order it yet, it seems that they are not worried about whether it sells at all!).

I just got off of the phone with Rhino customer service and the person I spoke to could not find or tell me anything about the release date or how to obtain this release. I also sent off an email to Rhino.

I was just over at Rhino's (retooled) website, and can find no mention of this title, even under Rhino Handmade. Guess I'll check again in a couple days.

As much as I am inclined to defend the man, in the context of his output across the last decade, you have a point.

 I may have messed up on the handmade thing- apparently it's Rhino, but not handmade. Sorry.

The only place it appears on rhino.com is on the list of forthcoming releases - and the link from that list to what should be a bit of PR for it does not work.
Rhino appear to be under resourced..

The link seems to be working now, including sound clips, though the one clip I was intrigued to hear (Steve Nicks' "Stand Back") is all instrumental... Also appears to be available for ordering...

Bizarre...this isn't being billed as a Handmade release, but doesn't seem to be available at any retail outlet. A Rhino.com exclusive, then? Either way, thanks for the link -- I'll be placing my order asap!

Stand back is an big favourite of mine - it does have a long instrumental intro, but when it kicks off it's great. Trevor Horn did a good job on it IMO
