Perhaps my favorite episode is "Plane Daffy" directed by Frank Tashlin. Daffy Duck during World War II—a self-proposed woman hater—works as a carrier pigeon delivering military secrets and goes up against Hatta Mari, the Queen of the Spies. Classic gags as Hatta chases Daffy around her house trying to kill him to get the secrets. Guest staring: Hitler, Goebbels, and Goering!

Before this episode was available on DVD, I had it up on YouTube where it got over 35,000 hits in four days before YouTube took it down. I had a very early copy shown on TV because my Dad bought a VCR around 1975. Pretty rare item to have, and then they stopped showing that particular cartoon, probably because of the suicide scene at the end by Goebbels and Goering, and likely because the Nazi theme and swastika symbols depicted throughout.

Back in the day, I used to get up every Saturday morning, fire up the VCR and record the cartoons. I had a 6 hour VHS tape of commercial free cartoons. I was in heaven. I'm terrible with titles though, I'll have to dig through the DVDs and see if I can spot a few of my favorites (there's many.)

"Mouse Wreckers", in which Hube and Bert wage a psychological campaign against Claude Cat, is one that doesn't get enough praise.

I just love the opera ones. And Duck Season/Rabbit Season. I don't think I have seen that Mata Hari one. A lot of the WWII ones have been suppressed, altho I do remember seeing some with appalling Japanese caricatures. Those non-PC ones would make a great DVD releases by themselves.

"The Three Little Bops", featuring sung narration by Stan Freberg, has one of my favorite lines ever: "The Dew-Drop Inn did drop down."

The mice, Hubie and Bertie, want to move into a very nice home. One problem though, it is occupied by a champion mouser. So, as Daphne says, they decide to drive him out by driving him insane by pranking him. The pranks start off small and lead up to the mice turning an entire room upside down. Excellent. My only trouble with this cartoon is that I always feel sorry for the cat. Unlike in Tom and Jerry type cartoons, you usually get the sense that the cat is a jerk and he deserves what he gets. Here, apart from being a great mouser—which is enough as far as the mice are concerned—the cat is pretty much just a victim. I think this idea of whether or not the actions are justified is why I like the Foghorn Leghorn and Barnyard Dawg episodes as much as I do. Those two give and take pretty equally.

A number of them were released on VHS, I have the one called Bugs and Daffy The Wartime Cartoons. Pretty tame compared to some of the ones I've seen (Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips I think is the title on one completely non-PC cartoon.)

But that particular one is so funny I can overlook it there. My big question is why, if the mice are strong enough to haul all that furniture up to the ceiling to nail it up there, are they worried about what a mere cat could do to them?

"What's Opera Doc" and "The Rabbit of Saville" are both excellent choices, and some of the very best Bugs Bunny cartoons ever made in my opinion. All three of the hunting trilogy of "Rabbit Seasoning," "Duck! Rabbit, Duck," and "Rabbit Fire" are quite excellent. And these are also examples of the worst censorship I have ever seen on a cartoon. It's one thing to NOT SHOW the cartoon completely, but the fools decided that they would cut out all of the scenes that involved getting a shotgun blast to the face, but decided to leave in the scenes where Daffy picked up his bill that had fallen off and reattach it—without showing how he lost it. That's worse than not showing the volence. It's showing stuff that makes no sense to kids—because it's colorful images and the kids are brain dead anyway, so it doesn't matter what's actually on the screen! I D I O T S !

"The Three Little Bops" is a great little gem by Friz Freleng and Stan Freberg, with music by Milton "Shorty" Rogers, especially some great trumpet work. Love that the Big Bad Wolf goes to hell: "The Big Bad Wolf, he learned the rule: you gotta get hot to play real cool!"

I like how they seem to take physics seriously enough to show that the mice can't just pull the cat up the chimney—and yet they tie the rope to a large rock which they push off the chimney —without answering how they managed to get the rock up there in the first place.

I think the Little Red Riding Rabbit episode is my favorite. "Hey, Grandma!"

Hmmm. I'll have to watch that one, Junkie. I have it in my head that they did two of these. But the one that comes to mind that I like is when they say "To Have" a lot, and the wolf dancing in a nice dress just before Bugs holds up a sign that says something like "Silly, Isn't He?"

The Bugs Bunny cartoon with Marvin the Martian is a classic as well. Just a visual delight.

I thought I had a copy of it, I'm just not sure where it is. I found the cartoon hilarious, especially Mel Blanc's gibberish as the Japanese soldier, but the racial slurs Bugs uses pretty much guarantee it won't see a DVD release. (If it's the one I'm thinking of where Bugs hands out ice cream to the Japanese with grenades inside.)

The aforementioned Bugs Bunny/Marvin the Martian cartoon that I love. I accept that space travel doesn't look like this in reality, but no one will ever convince me that this isn't how it SHOULD look
