Product Description
The first of three 2CD sets that will, between them, reissue the A- and B-sides of every single released by revered Memphis label Goldwax Records and its subsidiary labels between 1963 and 1971.

To soul fans, Goldwax remains one of the pivotal labels of the era, introducing the world to artists of the calibre of OV Wright, James Carr and the Ovations. But Goldwax also recorded and issued first-rate country, blues and garage rock, as will be heard during the course of this series.

Many of the tracks featured across this and future volumes will be receiving their first-ever CD issue. The whole project has been endorsed by Goldwax founder Quinton Claunch, who has also provided reminiscences of several of the more obscure artists that are featured.

Featuring copious single-by-single annotation, and with a shot of at least one side of every 45 that's featured in the set, this package is guaranteed to grab significant media attention in the wake of Ace's ongoing success with the 3CD "Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story" project.

Product Description
The second volume of "The Complete Goldwax Singles" sees us hit the labels golden period, where classic southern soul 45s pour out at a rate of knots. James Carr cements his place in the pantheon of great soul singers with a series of simply jaw-dropping singles. On this volume we have `You Got My Mind Messed Up', `Love Attack' and `Pouring Water On A Drowning Man' before we get to `Dark End Of The Street', the song that not only defined him, but quite possibly the whole southern soul genre.

Volume Two is not just James Carr: the Ovations made amazing 45s at this period of the labels history, as did soul man Spencer Wiggins, who serves up the sublime `Uptight Good Woman', among others. Other brilliant slices of southern soul featured are from Percy Milem, Eddie Jefferson, George (Jackson) and (Dan) Greer and Barbara Perry.

As with Volume One, part of the fun of a complete singles compilation are the oddities and one-offs. Here are R&B dancers by Oboe, Ivory Joe Hunter and future hit-maker Timmy Thomas and fantastic Memphis garage from the Yo-Yos. We also see forays into the country market with Carmol Taylor, the Terrys and Kathy Davis singles. They usually included one side of the sort of ballad that bears a close relationship to the deepest country soul.

"The Complete Goldwax Singles Volume 1" was the recipient of some fantastic reviews: featured in Mojo (½ page lead review), Uncut, and Record Collector. Anticipate more of the same with this new volume.

Product Description
This is the final instalment of the singles released on Goldwax. After the height of success represented in Volume 2, this is a more sober affair. The label reached the end of the road and eventually closed over this period as its major artists: James Carr, Spencer Wiggins and the Ovations, found themselves out of fashion and out of hits, despite no collapse in quality.

James Carr and Spencer Wiggins are represented here with some of their most impassioned recordings: Carr's pounding `Freedom Train' and Wiggins' amazing take on `I Never Loved A Woman'.

Label owners Quinton Claunch and Doc Russell strove to find to broaden the label's appeal during this time-frame. This included the launch of the country label Timmie, which saw Carmol Taylor release some incredible records. But Memphis was no Nashville and the hits didn't follow. Other ploys included licensing to major labels such as Chess and United Artist's Veep label, but nothing led to another artist breakthrough.

Across the two CDs is some incredible southern soul recorded in Memphis and Muscle Shoals, not just by the headline acts but by Percy Milem and Willie Walker, future stars such as Timmy Thomas and the terminally obscure Willie Morgan. These recordings represent the best work of such studios as American Recordings, Sounds Of Memphis and Rick Hall's Fame studio.
