Kirsty MacColl justice committee to cease campaigning

Members of a group campaigning for justice for the late Kirsty MacColl have announced they are to disband.

Justice For Kirsty was set up after MacColl was killed by a speedboat while holidaying in Cozumel, Mexico on December 18, 2000.

A blog posted on Justiceforkirsty.org stated that the group had decided to disband because Mexican authorities have now closed the case. It added that, despite "all avenues of investigation" being exhausted, no further information as to who should be implicated in the incident had come to light.

"Once the case was closed there was virtually nothing left for the committee to campaign for," the blog read. "We are not able to bring any more pressure on the Mexicans than we have achieved already."

MacColl's mother, Jean, set up Justice For Kirsty shortly after her daughter's death, and she is to carry on promoting the key issues on a personal level.

The blog writers thank Billy Bragg and The Pogues – both of whom MacColl collaborated with – for their support. The remaining money held by the group is being given to two charities – Casa Alianza Mexico and Cuba Music Solidarity.

A boat hand, Juan Jose Cen Yam, was convicted of causing the accident and sentenced to pay a punitive fine of £61 as well as damages to MacColl's family.
