I think this has a Bob Layton interview on it, one he did at the same time as the interview for the DVD release of the Robert Downey Jr IM film.

But I could be mistaken.

I like it. Classic Tony Stark instead of Ultimate.

Looks pretty good, though I always liked the way the original story had him build the armor outta stone knives and bearskins.

And "Invincible" kinda gives away the ending, don't you think?

I didn't see a single bottle of liquor in that whole trailer.

One star.

And here's the DVD, coming out on Tuesday:

Image

Amazon.com
Marvel Comics' armor-clad superhero Iron Man gets another update in this animated feature, which incorporates much of his mythology in its energetic storyline. Here, millionaire Tony Stark (voiced by Marc Worden, who performed similar duties for Marvel's Ultimate Avengers and its sequel) is inspired to create his iconic suit after being injured at an archaeological dig in China. His heroic alter ego isn't the only thing to arise from the dig; the ancient city harbors a quartet of elemental spirits, who seek to resurrect the Mandarin and continue his reign of evil. Hardcore Marvel fans may decry some of the deviations from the original Iron Man text (Stark's father Howard is alive and well in the feature, and the suits are already in development by the time Stark is injured), but the prevalence of numerous figures from the source material (in addition to the Mandarin, there's James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, Pepper Potts, the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Wong Chu, and glimpses of several incarnations of the Iron Man suit) and the overall vigor of the story and the quality of the 2-D and 3-D animation should please most viewers, and makes for an enjoyable alternative to the impressive 2008 live-action film. Extras include a making-of featurette which discusses Stark's 1960s origins in the comic book and the direction taken in the movie, as well as a terrific gallery of Shellhead's various suits worn throughout his storied career. A glimpse at Marvel's next animated feature--Doctor Strange--is also included. Note for parents: The Invincible Iron Man contains some intense violence and implied nudity, so discretion should be taken before screening for very young viewers.

Product Description
Past and present collide in this epic adventure that reveals the origin of Iron Man. While raising the ruins of a long buried Chinese kingdom, billionaire inventor Tony Stark digs up far more than he bargained for. He unleashes an age-old prophecy that foretells the resurrection of the Mandarin, the emperor of China's darkest and most violent dynasty. In order to confront the destructive force, Tony creates an armored suit infused with high-tech weaponry. To stop the evil that he himself has raised form the earth, Tony must become his greatest invention ever - Iron Man! The newly born champion must travel to the four corners of the earth to battle the Mandarin's henchmen, the Elementals - four magical warriors who harness the power of the elements - earth, water, wind, and fire - with deadly chemistry. But is the Iron Knight, as he his known in the prophecy, strong enough to defy fate and turn back the malevolent forces hell-bent on earth's destruction?

This doesn't look too bad. The YouTube video Ian posted is no longer available, but I watched a short clip from it on the SuperheroHype site last night, and it didn't look bad. The only thing I did notice is that Pepper's voice seemed off. An accent of some sort that didn't seem right for her. But that won't stop me from picking this up next week.

I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. If I get the time I'd watch it.

Many thanks, ma'am. You're a peach!

As for the video, I don't love it, but I like it well enough. The animation doesn't look cutting edge, though, considering Iron Man is the cutting edge hero. But, if the story's good, I'll be happy.

There was a fairly positive review of this on Newsarama the other day - ah, here we go.

Nice to see a good review to start things off. As long as MODOK isn't the comedy relief in this one, I think we're pretty golden.

Ian, Bob Layton has been interviewed about a movie that hasn't even been shot yet? That's reeeaaaally early, no?

Yep :)

Well, it could just have been that, since they were putting together the package for this animated IM movie, that they'd do the full interview for both movies.

Or something.

I really don't know what I'm talking about here - I just thought it was kinda cool that I found out about it a couple of weeks before everyone else could

Well, I picked this up today and the family unit sat down and watched it whilst eating dinner. My thoughts...

Not totally terrible. Not stunningly great. I didn't get any real "Wow" moments out of it, sadly. I think I might have actually gotten bored. The origin was significantly altered, which didn't thrill me, but it was passable. Rhodey's character had a different background, which I didn't find necessary at all, despite the writer's insistence that it was. Pepper seemed to be more Mrs. Arbogast in attitude, and she had just a hint of an accent that just didn't seem at all right for the character.

The character of the Mandarin was totally altered, and not in a good way. Plus, only five rings? What the--?!! The writer said he didn't want to use a character like Justin Hammer for the villain, but apparantly he didn't want to use the Mandarin either, because the two minutes the character was on the screen at the end didn't give me any real indication it was him. Personally, I think characters like Justin Hammer, AIM, and the Spymaster would be great villains for an animated feature about a technologically advanced character. Ah well.

I was a little disappointed with the animation, as I had been with the two Avengers movies out so far, as well. Iron Man is a cutting-edge character, and the animation and especially the CGI didn't seem up to that standard in my opinion. An entire movie done up with CG work like the cut scenes in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance would have had me glued to the TV. This didn't seem any better than the animation from the second season of the mid-90's cartoon, which I loved at the time, but it was, what, 13 years ago?

The extras were pretty neat. Bob Layton and Sean Chen made brief appearances in one of the featurettes, and the Hall of Armor section was pretty well done and the information accurate, though the graphics of the armors looked like someone didn't know how to operate a scanner properly. The fairly lengthy preview of the Dr. Strange animated feature was pretty decent, though it appears they took some large liberties with the origin of Stephen Strange, too. We'll see come August.

Overall, I'm hard-pressed to give this a 2.5 out of 5. Too many things that didn't seem quite right about it. I'm normally not one to object to different mediums coming up with different takes on things, but the changes made in this movie left me scratching my head.

I think it's obvious there's going to be an unrated or "european" version.
