Bannings: If you're not nice
As a sidebar to the thread about how y'all store your CDs ... approximately how many CDs do you currently own?

Ever do "purges" or spring cleanings of your collection based on your changing tastes?

I would say I'm comfortably in the plus 5,000 category. I also must have over 1,000 DVDs.

I' ve got about 4,000.(yes, I know this is 1 or 2 months worth to some here. God Bless you ) :lmao2: I've kept most of my LP's, so I have about 4 thousand of those.

I have yet to purge.

I'll have to take some time out in the next day or two and count them. It's not much by others standards. BTW, I count by title and not by literal #'s of discs I have.

My best estimate is 11,000 CDs (titles).

My best estimate is more than DanO.

Probably between 13-14,000. Plus ~3,000 LPs, and a bunch of singles (7" and 12"). I bet I have more CD3 singles than anybody else (at least 200).

Including CD singles, I'm probably close to the 15K threshold myself... sadly, more and more of it is ending up in boxed archives due to lack of space.

I'm (very) slowly cataloguing using CATraxx, but don't hold your breath.

Wowwwww...I'm not even close--861 individual CDs (including bootlegs and CD-Rs) and 297 individual DVDs.

About 3500 individual titles, not counting Dead discs from trades etc. I would guess about half my collection is classical music.

I suspected that Jimbo had well over 10,000, but I didn't expect anyone else on the board to have more.

I've been trying to get my Inventory up to date, which says 2020 titles (not counting trade discs), and I'd take another 100-150 not included. Long Christmas break around here, maybe I'll finish it up...

Between 7000 and 8000 General CDs, including singles

Plus

500 to 600 Country, Folk, Bluegrass CDs

Plus

1000 or so Soundtracks and Various Artists compilations CDs

Plus

200 Kids or Kids-related CDs

Plus

800 to 900 Christmas CDs, both compilations and individual artists CDs

I parted with most of my vinyl a couple of years ago when I returned from vacation to a large flood that damaged many. I still have 4-5 book boxes of vinyl, but that's it.

I was pretty sure that there were at least a few people with more than I had, so I'm not surprised to see some of the numbers that people are putting up here.

One thing that has slowed me down is I'm very picky in what I buy (I only buy if I'll listen to it...not just for collectively) and the fact that at this point my album collection has been easily matched by CDs.

I've got all the albums I need by most of the 60's thru 90's major groups that I like.
I don't buy any of today's so called "Top 40" groups. That really slows down my quantity.

I've got about 2500 single title CDs and roughly 200 box sets. I also thought there would be some high numbers here.

When I left college I had 700 lps. My first jobs were in Record Stores, Radio Stations, and Recording Distributing companies so 3 years after college I had 2000 LPs. Then flash forward to 1984 and since then I've been recollecting that collection on CD as well as keeping up with current titles and going deeper and deeper.

I have purged occassionally. Up to 200 discs at a time. But...I've got a problem. I buy REO's Hi Infidelity at least once every four years!

Has anyone actually seen the storage units that CanAm used to advertise in ICE? They appear to be a little pricey. But it might be time for one or two of them. Any feedback?

Aren't you glad you asked? We love talking about our CD collections! :yay:

I must admit that I had no idea that DanO and mjb were up there in Jimbo territory...mighty impressive! I knew Walter was pretty close. At about 6000 or so, I wonder if I'm even in the top 10 around here. Oh well, I'll bet I still have the largest private CD collection in the largest state in the nation!

I'd like to think I have more than anyone in Kentucky, but can't really say. I haven't counted for a long time, but would say i'm in the Walter/Ven catagory at least. I also collect comics so I'm getting a little crowded for space. All my vinyl I still own and is in the basement with the comics...

I've only got the one room that I sleep in plus part of a storage room, and because I also collect books, comics, and videotapes, I'm now down to stacking on the floor. It makes me sad that I cannot go on forever, but it's very hard to stop because it's become a lifestyle now. I mean, where do you draw the line? There's so much good music out there and I haven't even finished the big names that I like.

CD's, that is. If you include vinyl, Jimbo appears to be the champ.
