Hello Ian and fellow coloring friends. Per Master Ian's request, here is my Cap/Red Skull piece as I colored it. (Critiques please) Below the message here, I've included the full size inks with no colors in case Ian or anyone else would like to have a hand at coloring. Enjoy, and thanks again Ian for the outstanding tutorial. That one is added to my permanent tool bag! http://www.stephenbertrand.com/junk/capskullinks.jpg

Okay, the thing I wanted to talk about on this picture is a common thing I see in a lot of colouring - using a particular colour of lighting with no transitional colour. What do I mean by this? Well, there is a yellow light (from the fire behind the characters) placed on Cap. Right beside that is Cap's regular blue colour. A transitional colour would show why you can see that saturated a yellow colour on top of another colour that doesn't have any yellow in it. To explain further. Using CMYK values, let's say that the colour of yellow in that light is, oh, 40% Yellow. Using the same values, let's say the 'mid-tone' or 'average' colour on Cap's blues is 80% Cyan. Now, if you put 40% yellow beside 80% Cyan, it looks like you have two strips of paint. And that is the effect created here - it looks like Cap is partially dipped into yellow paint. While this is done all the time in comics, there are better ways to go about it, ones that will add a lot of life to an image.

Okay, here's how I'm going to go about painting just this part of the page. First, as with the Iron Man image, I put down the basic 'flat' colours, using the darkest colours I will want on the page. In this case, because I know that I want to have a yellow light casting onto Cap, I make certain that my shadow colour contains quite a bit of yellow. In this case, the actual colour (in CMYK values) is: K (or black) 44% Y (yellow) 54% M (magenta) 58% C (cyan) 93%

Now, looking at the inks on this image, it looks to me like the primary light source is not the yellow but is, in fact, coming from in front and to the (our) left - this is arrow 1. Thus, I'm going to go with that light source first, then go to the yellow side-lighting (arrow 2).

I finish up the blue modeling, making sure that this part won't look too green (despite how much yellow I added to the shadow colour - the only part that should really look a bit green is along where I intend to put the yellow side-lighting). Adding in little spot highlights on Cap's chainmail is totally by personal preference - if the artist has added the little bumpy chain shadows, then I will throw in a little bit. If they don't put in any, I usually won't put in any either (it tends to look a little odd just by itself).

And now I add in the yellow side-light (in this case, a top-light). Now, the transition colour I mentioned earlier is the darker patch of blue-green between the yellow and the blue modeling - because this is darker, the yellow looks more like light than paint. I even have the yellow light vary in colour a little bit, getting brighter at the 'centre' of each part of the modeling.

First off, thank you SOOOO much for doing these tutorials. I know I for one (and I'm sure Stephen does as well) appreciate the time and tips you're throwing up here!! Second, when you use the airbrush tool for this step, are you making selections, or are you just using the brush tool set to airbrush mode?

Heh - well, first off, thank to both of you.
I use the airbrush tool (not the paintbrush with airbrush-style tips, actually) with selections, pretty much the same way as with the grad tool. The grad tool is faster once you get the hang of it, but the airbrush is better for places like the modeling on the leg and such.
Stephen, I'm getting pretty backed up with work at the moment, but I'll see if I can't get the rest of the picture done soon

Ah.
Well, not really. I guess I generally just know whether I'm going to skew everything towards warm colours or cool colours when I'm flatting a page, so I just adjust that as I put down the colours, rather than changing them after flatting them.

Thanks coach! Your flat colors are so "close" to each other it looked like you were dropping a "shadow color" over everything, but I understand what you're doing now. There is a LOT more color theory that goes into this than I thought.

Well, if you're GOOD, then there's a lot of theory...
