Reprise Records is revisiting early Bee Gees with a restoration of their first 3 studio albums that include their first album (1967), Horizontal (1968), and Idea (1968). All three of these albums are being remastered and turned into 2CD Expanded and Remastered editions but packaged as a 6CD Box with all titles. All albums are remastered in Stereo and Mono versions that include some previously unissued songs. Some of those songs are alternate takes, early versions, single edits, and, in a case, a commercial edit. Within these discs are some well-known Bee Gees cuts like "To Love Somebody," "New York Mining Disaster, 1941," "Words," "Massachusetts," "I Started a Joke," and "I've Gotta Get a Message To You."
This Box set is a limited and numbered set with deluxe slipcased and the individual albums housed in gatefold digipaks. The albums will also have plenty of photos, expanded booklets with new liner notes and interviews (Barry and Robin Gibb). With the care poured into these new remasters and 40 previously unavailable tracks, the Bee Gees fan and collector should be in heaven. This set, called Bee Gees: The Studio Albums - 1967-1968 and will be released on November 7.

I don't know if this box is done in conjunction with Rhino, but if not and there are Rhino remasters in the pipeline, I'd say this is a much more tempting deal because of the mono versions of each album. Even the bonus tracks sound enticing.

Warner/Reprise/Rhino. Andrew Sandoval, who also worked on the recently released Monkees reissues of their first two albums, was the main cog behind this project as well. This box and the subsequent ones are going to be beauties to own.

It's also refreshing that they didn't airbrush the cigarettes out of the photo, unlike box sets by The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel.

I'm wondering if Prince got his Red/Purple thing from the young Barry Gibb.

I wonder if future Bee Gees plans include officially issuing the previously unreleased album A Kick in the Head Is Worth Eight in the Pants.

With Maurice gone, it would make sense to release everything of quality that's collecting dust in the vaults. There is definitely a market for it, and I don't think we'll see any more new Bee Gees recordings from Barry and Robin.

Listening to the box set sampler this weekend the remastering blew me away. This box set is a must!

Worth the wait.

For those who hesitated to pre-order and now wish to walk in and purchase, here is what I found:

Best Buy has an online price of $55.?? that they can probably be persuaded to match in store. Problem was that no store in the greater Houston area received any - verified onscreen in the store, zeroes across the whole region .

I then went to Borders and purchased @ $59.??. They had received 4 copies at one of Houston's larger stores (Kirby). I had to ask for it; the boxes hadn't made it to the sales floor yet. They were nice enough to go to the back twice. The first box they brought me had a deep scratch on the face. I then was allowed to chose from all 4 received which was a nice gesture.


There is clear improvement in definition on all three albums. It must be true that these discs are mastered from a better, earlier generation source. Best to my ear is the stereo version of Bee Gees 1st.

I went to Best Buy today and they confirmed it is out, but they did not order any. I went to Borders and they had a few in the back and the price tag was $75, but was on sale for $54, so I snatched it up immediately

I've been waiting for so long to hear Bee Gee's 1st remastered. It was always irking that the Rebound Records lackluster release was about the only way to buy it on cd.

Haven't had time to listen yet, but for those in the MA area who are going to buy it, Newbury Comics has it on sale for $55.99.

Beautifully packaged, but that's as far as i've gotten so far.

Due to a glitch in their computing system pertaining specifically to my November orders from CD Universe, my copy of this will not ship until Friday.

I've now been informed that it will ship today. I had been wondering why I hadn't been getting the periodic e-mails from them telling me of the order status. If I hadn't called up today, it wouldn't have been sent. They are supposed to tell me what happened. I'll report back and let you know when they do.

Someone on the Rhino website made a comment on the prior mastering problems that didn't get "corrected" on this set.

Two things mentioned were that the Stereo version of Horizontal plays too slow and the Mono version of Idea plays too fast.

I never had these two LPs originally. Does anybody know if this was a problem that stems from the original Atco vinyl? Or was this some error that was recently made in the CD age?

Before anyone starts spreading false rumors of speed errors in Rhino's mastering of the Bee Gees "Studio Albums 1967-68" box,I must stress that the speed differences between the mono & stereo mixes is AS IT WAS(and is) in the Mixes Themselves.I have the UK mono vinyl of "Idea" and can confirm that some selctions run audibly faster than the stereo mix,This is particularly noticeable on the song "Kitty Can".Breathe easy,The speed(as heard on the new box set) IS CORRECT.It may well be that certain songs were recorded at a certain key,and then intentionally altered(for artistic reasons) during mixdown,and,given the technology of the times,that the speed couldn't be altered to precisely the same extent in different mixes done on different days.Young as they were,it is unlikely that the Bee Gees voices were really as high pitched as they sound on "Kitty Can".Other examples of songs that were intentionally speed altered include The Beatles' "Rain",Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same" & Genesis "Invisible Touch".I believe the term is Varispeeding.

That's cool enough for me. As long as the speed issues were done in the 60s on the original releases, I'm fine with that. The discs have been reissued as they were. That is what I want anyway.

I was just concerned when I saw that person posting that message on the Rhino website. I would have hated to shell out $60 for a set that I would have to send some of the discs back to Rhino later for corrected versions.

I just received this set from CD Universe last night (held up because I ordered the new deluxe John Mayall and the BluesBreakers Beano CD with it and that seems to have gone on backorder) and what a great set!

Thanks, Phil, for the note on the speed issue(s). The discs sound terrific -- I also have been waiting for years for a good remastering of the first album.

I guess I didn't realize that each box was individually numbered (even though when I re-read the press release it is stated). I have box something like 7491 out of 10,000. It always surprises me that there aren't at least 10,000 other people out there in this populous place who wouldn't have snagged them all before I got one.
