I've been going through another batch of donated trades. Yesterday I went through the "World Without a Superman" arc. I remember when it came out, but did not read it at the time. I was surprised to find that it had some touching moments in it, especially when the Kents told Lois and Lana that they would still always be family to them.

And there was a lot of weird, wild stuff going on at the Camus Project and the tunnels beneath it!

I liked that whole epilogue to the death of Superman story. It was pretty well done.

It ruined us for all of the fake superhero deaths that followed. To paraphrase the graveyard attendant at Metamorpho's funeral, "Hell Superman, after YOU came back from the dead, we quit assuming that the rest of these dead superheroes are really dead." (Rex Mason returned a couple of years later.)

But the death and the world without storylines were really good reads.

I remember in Identity Crisis GA having an internal monologue about being able to deal with the death of heroes. Something like "by the time I bought it, we knew what to do". It's bad enough doing the "death of..."stories, but don't acknowledge in universe how often characters come back from the dead.

There was a great scene in an issue of Aztek, the Ultimate Man, where there were a bunch of supervillains at another supervillain's funeral, and among the chitchat, "Oh, nobody here actually LIKED him, they just want to make sure he's really dead" and "Don't cry, he'll be back next year with extra powers." By Morrison & Millar.

Hoping part of the aftermath of BLACKEST NIGHT is an end to the revolving door of death.

I just noticed that I misspelled "Cadmus Project" as "Camus Project." A Camus Project would presumably be a French government operation, not something done in the U.S. And it would probably be a very depressing place.

I enjoyed the whole "Death of.../World without a.../Return of..." storylines, especially the four different Supermen. It was all very well done.

Kevin is correct. Unfortunately, the aftermath gave us mullet Superman and a bunch of bad stories for about 10 years.

I disagree. I think that everything from Death (and most of what came before it) to the Red/Blue Supes (but not including it) was solid stuff.

Hated it. Never felt like Superman to me. Some nice moments but that's it.
