(reposted with cover art... a "new" release featuring archival material from Neil's early classic years...)
Neil Young
• " Live At The Fillmore East"
Reprise, November 14
1. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
2. Winterlong
3. Down By The River
4. Wonderin'
5. Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown
6. Cowgirl In The Sand
from Amazon.com--
For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase.

Not that this really matters in the grand scheme of things, but I don't think this qualifies as a "new release." On the other hand, it's not a "reissue" either.
Something like this - a release of previously unreleased vault material - belongs in "Collectors Corner."
Just a personal observation. Then again, what the hell do I know...?

If this was a limited-edition release... I'd likely agree.
But its debatable to really call it a reissue... since it's never come out on CD before. Judgement call on this one... I could move it... (but it won't be to CC).

A preview copy was on eBay today, but it had 7 tracks, not 6. Maybe the 7th track is an interview. Update ----------- Here's the track listing: 1. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 2. Winterlong 3. Down by the River 4. Wonderin' ...Commentary Track 5. Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown 6. Cowgirl in the Sand http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0039674726

9.99 @ J and R in New Yawk, or 12.84 with shipping (no tax on out of state shipments)
the DVD edition, the best I could find was 19.99 @ BestBuy

OK, just to clarify: Is there a special edition that includes both CD and DVD? Or do I have to buy them separately?
If it doesn't show up at 'Rama today, that $9.99 price at J&R is pretty attractive.

I got the CD version for $8.99 because of that Wherehouse sale last month. I didn't know there was a CD/DVD version or I would have ordered that.

In the upper right hand corner of the cover for this disc is the information that this is Disc 02 of the Neil Young Archives - Performance Series (NYA PS). Does anyone know about this nomenclature? Is there another release that is Disc 01 or is planned to be Disc 01? I have the CD/DVD version. I wonder if that is what makes it Disc 02 and the version with just the CD is Disc 01? Is it a Traveling Wilburys Vol III kind of thing?
By the way, it sounds great!

The CD is a great bargain. I don't now whats on the DVD. Is it that concert filmed live? Then it would be worth tracking down.

Here's a few fill-in-the-blanks from allmusic.com review:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... wrea9yk~T1
"Billed as the second volume of the "Performance Series" — clearly, the numbers are assigned chronologically in order of recording, not release — <snip>"
"And what whip-sawed the emotion from high to bummer in the time it took to read...
(including a DVD of the show, where the main program plays to photos of the band from the tour), "
I'm sure excellent stills, but not going to go out of the way or dig too deep for the
DVD set. Will pick this up tomorrow.

Is the DVD in 5.1? or is it just stereo? It seems sonically, the CD version is fine since it is HDCD.

This is a real treat, doubtless. My only gripe, and this is not the first time i have run into this with Neil's releases and some others. If you are going to put out something in the mini-lp sleeve format, can you at least house the disc in a manner which doesn't get the disc all scuffed up from being inserted (at the factory) into too tight of a space, with no outer sleeve protection, and seemingly always with the play side of the cd rubbing against the inner fold-over of cardboard (which pretty much assures the scuffing damage). I am tired of paying good money for "NEW" cds which are damaged (even though they will usually play). I expect a new condition, shiney, unblemished cd for my hard-earned money. In most cases the scuffing has been substantial enough that i return it to the retailer (and have had some interesting discussions/debates with the clerks about why i do not consider a cd that is all scuffed and/or scratched to be "new"). Because i am a frequent customer i have always prevailed on exchanging these discs, but am tiring of the extra trips and the diplomatic exercise involved in doing so.
I don't expect anything close to the precision and quality employed in the Japanese mini-lp editions, but in just enough consideration to package them in a way which enables them to arrive in truly "new" condition to the customer.
The scuffs (on both the cd and dvd) were minor enough in this case that i am not going to bother exchanging it, but i am getting fed up with this continuing problem.
So, i am even more of a wack-job than most collectors, or do any others share this observation and frustration?

I also noticed that the CD was house with no protection. I'm gonna add a plastic sleeve to the packaging to protect the CD in the future.

Not at all. I don't mind packaging other than jewel cases, however, it needs to be in a way which protects the disc.

I made a command decision that the DVD was extraneous for my purposes, and picked up the CD at J&R for $9.99. It rocks.
