I recently repurchased the deluxe version of The Who Sings My Generation from CD Universe . When I was listening to it it sounded much different from what I remember from when I first had it . I was looking it over and I noticed it was the European import . Were the American and European version different mixes ?
Also , what are the chances of Deluxe Editions of Who Are You and The Who By Numbers ever getting released ?

I haven't heard the European version of "My Generation", sorry. But given that over five years elapsed between the "Tommy" DE and the "Who Sell Out" DE, I wouldn't hold my breath for WAY and WBN to be expanded any time soon. Not when there are best-of compilations to put out! (I'm also not holding my breath waiting for a "Second Singles Box")

That said, I'd rather see an expanded "Quadrophenia" before either WAY and WBN.

The stereo portion of the My Generation deluxe is a remix by the album's original producer, Shel Talmy.

When they were doing the stereo remix, they were unable to find some of the original tape elements, thus, the title track is missing the lead guitar "twang" overdubs during the middle section. I've never heard the original mono LP, but not having the lead guitar overdubs is very noticeable on that song, as I've always heard it with those little flourishes.

That may explain why it sounds so different to you.

Just get the old MCA cd if you want the original mix. I've got that one and the DE. I still need to buy the DE of Who Sell Out.

Wait--I'm confused. I thought Don was saying his EU deluxe edition sounded different from his US deluxe edition? I'd be curious to know if Talmy was permitted to make any changes between the two versions. I know the US versions of "A Quick One" had some tracks switched from stereo mono, with no change to the packaging or catalog number other than a sticker on the jewel box.

Is the SACD worth getting?

The first 12 tracks on My Generation Deluxe reflect the UK tracklisting, the US Who Sings My Generation replaced the track I'm a Man with Circles. So the tracklisting is slightly different as is the order of the final 3 tracks.
The stereo mix was done especially for the deluxe edition and omited a lot of overdubs notably, the lead guitar parts in A Legal Matter and My Generation and the double tracked vocals in The Good's Gone, Much Too Much, La-La-La Lies and The Kids Are Alright.
There is no difference in the European and US deluxe editions.

The Japanese mono CD with all the 1965 bonus tracks is the way to go with My Generation, not the stereo remix.

The thing that dumbfounds me about this Deluxe Edition is that the total time for both discs COMBINED is a paltry 92 minutes. Which means there was PLENTY of room leftover for a complete remastered MONO edition of the album. Disc one is titled "The Original Album" which is totally false...every track is missing some sort of overdub, so it's really an "alternate mix". It's incredibly annoying to hear "My Generation" without the signature guitar solo. I've bought every one of the Who DE's, but this one gets very little play. And, we still don't have a clean remastered (domestic) mono.

A real head-scratcher.

Maybe in another 30 years, Shel Talmy will decide to revisit it.
