Well, since my previous album appreciation threads have been fairly successful, I'm going to torpedo that winning streak with a new thread about the albums of my favorite seventies teen idol band...The Bay City Rollers!! ROLLIN' (UK, 1974) "Shang-a-Lang" - Coulter, Martin – 3:07 "Give It to Me Now" - Coulter, Martin – 3:48 "Angel Angel" - Faulkner, Wood – 2:27 "Be My Baby" - Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector – 3:27 "Just a Little Love" - Faulkner, Wood – 2:57 "Remember (Sha la la la)" - Coulter, Martin – 2:33 "Saturday Night" - Coulter, Martin – 2:57 "Ain't It Strange" - Faulkner, McKeown, Wood – 2:10 "Please Stay" - Burt Bacharach, Bob Hilliard – 3:54 "Jenny Gotta Dance" - Coulter, Martin – 3:06 "There Goes My Baby" - Faulkner, Wood – 3:18 "Summerlove Sensation" - Coulter, Martin – 3:12 After several single releases in the UK, The Bay City Rollers finally released their first full album, Rollin.' Unfortunately, the group's prowess as musicians cannot be truly assessed here because aside from the vocals, the instrumentation was supplied by studio musicians. Ironically, the single "Saturday Night" would flop in the UK, only to become the group's breakthrough hit (and only #1 single) in the US two years later. But one can't argue with the mighty sing-along nature of songs like "Shang-A-Lang" and "Saturday Night," now can one??

Moving right along... ONCE UPON A STAR (UK, 1975) "Bye Bye Baby" - Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio – 2:50 "The Disco Kid" - Faulkner, Wood – 3:16 "La Belle Jeanne" - Faulkner, Wood – 4:01 "When Will You Be Mine" - Goodison, Wainman – 2:32 "Angel Baby" - Faulkner, Wood – 3:52 "Keep on Dancing" - Young – 2:42 "Once Upon A Star" - Faulkner, Wood – 3:00 "Let's Go (A Huggin' And A Kissin' In The Moonlight)" - Goodison, Wainman – 3:28 "Marlina" - Faulkner, McKeown, Wood – 3:01 "My Teenage Heart" - Faulkner, Wood – 2:31 "Rock & Roll Honeymoon" - Goodison, Wainman – 2:45 "Hey! Beautiful Dreamer" - Faulkner, McKeown, Wood – 3:49 Once the news got out in the UK that the Bay City Rollers had used studio musicians on their debut album, Bell Records decreed that the Rollers would play their own instruments on future albums and this began with the group's second UK album, Once Upon A Star. The group had a massive UK hit with their remake of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons' "Bye Bye Baby" and 1975 was the year that "Rollermania" overtook the UK, paving the way for Clive Davis (president of the label that took over Bell, Arista) to decide to bring the boys over to the US to see if it would take hold in the states as well. Did it? Stay tuned.

The original Once Upon a Star LP had quite an elaborate fold-open cover design, IIRC.

Jimbo wrote: The original Once Upon a Star LP had quite an elaborate fold-open cover design, IIRC. My album was just a standard sleeve. After I'd gotten mine via mail order, I saw the one you're talking about at a record store around 1978. I was intrigued, but I'd already gotten my LP and never bothered getting that variant cover. Thanks for being the first person to reply to this thread, Herr Jimbo!

You skipped the early, pre-Les singles! How about some evil love for those?

Never really cared for Nobby Clark and his flat, nasal tone. Besides, those singles were really studio musicians under the aegis of Jonathan King (producer). The real BCR era begins with Les, Eric, Derek, Woody & Alan for me. But I'm glad to see that our eagle-eyed librarian Miss Linda is taking notice of such matters.

Chris,
Has there ever been an official CD compilation of the pre-Les singles? According to that poster at YouTube there were five singles with Nobby Clark, enough to fill an album.

I think some of them may have appeared on a Japanese LP comp or two, but I don't think they've ever all been compiled officially on one LP or CD. Plus too, as the pre-Les BCR issued no albums, those single b-sides could fill out a full album time-wise.

Rollermania finally hits the US!! BAY CITY ROLLERS (US, 1975) "Give A Little Love" - Goodison, Wainman "Bye Bye Baby" - Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio "Shang-A-Lang" - Martin, Coulter "Marlina" - Faulkner, McKeown, Wood "Let's Go (A Huggin' And A Kissin' In The Moonlight)" - Goodison, Wainman "Be My Baby" - Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector "Summer Love Sensation" - Martin, Coulter "Remember (Sha-La-La-La)" - Martin, Coulter "Saturday Night" - Martin, Coulter "My Teenage Heart" - Faulkner, Wood "Keep On Dancing" - Young After taking over Bell Records, Clive Davis jettisoned most of the label's acts, but decided to see if Rollermania, then at the height of it's UK hysteria, could overtake the US as well. This album is essentially a compilation of tracks from the band's first two UK albums, with their then-current single, "Give A Little Love" thrown in for good measure. This was the USA's introduction to the Rollers and what an introduction. "Saturday Night," the flop UK single from two years' prior, went to #1 in the US and ushered in Rollermania, US style!

WOULDN'T YOU LIKE IT? (UK, 1975) "I Only Wanna Dance With You" (Faulkner, Wood) "Don't Stop the Music" (Faulkner, Wood) "Shanghai'd in Love" (Faulkner, Wood) "Love Is" (Faulkner, Wood) "Maybe I'm a Fool to Love You" (Faulkner, Wood) "Too Young to Rock & Roll" (Faulkner, Wood) "Give a Little Love" (Goodison, Wainman) "Wouldn't You Like It" (Faulkner, Wood) "Here Comes That Feeling Again" (Faulkner, Wood) "Lovely to See You" (Faulkner, Wood) "Eagles Fly" (Faulkner, Wood) "Derek's End Piece" (Faulkner, Wood) Easily my favorite BCR album ever. With the exception of "Give A Little Love," the album was written by guitarist Eric Faulkner and guitarist/bassist Stuart "Woody" Wood. A great slice of bubblegum teen pop and rock with a great, infectious spirit. After this, Clive Davis would micro-manage the band's artistic output and things would never be the same as a result.

ROCK N' ROLL LOVE LETTER (US, 1976) "Money Honey" (Faulkner, Wood) "La Belle Jeane" (Faulkner, Wood) "Rock And Roll Love Letter" (Moore) "Maybe I'm A Fool To Love You" (Faulkner, Wood) "Wouldn't You Like It" (Faulkner, Wood) "I Only Wanna Dance With You" (Faulkner, Wood) "Shanghai'd In Love" (Faulkner, Wood) "Don't Stop The Music" (Faulkner, Wood) "The Disco Kid" (Faulkner, Wood) "Eagles Fly" (Faulkner, Wood) "Too Young To Rock & Roll" (Faulkner, Wood) The BCR's second US album was another compilation of previously released UK tracks, primarily from Wouldn't You Like It, with a couple of Once Upon A Star songs and two newly recorded tracks. Same album cover as the UK Wouldn't You Like It, with over half that album's tracks.

DEDICATION (1976) UK VERSION: "Let's Pretend" (Eric Carmen) "You're a Woman" (Faulkner, Wood) "Rock 'N Roller" (Faulkner, Wood) "Don't Worry Baby" (B.Wilson, R.Christian) "Yesterday's Hero" (Vanda, Young) "My Lisa" (T.Scutio, S.Egorin) "Money Honey" (Faulkner, Wood) "Rock 'N Roll Love Letter" (Tim Moore) "Write A Letter" (Wood, McKeown, Mitchell) "Dedication" (Fletcher, Flett) US VERSION: "Let's Pretend" (Eric Carmen) – 3:31 "You're a Woman" (Faulkner, Wood) – 4:15 "Rock 'N Roller" (Faulkner, Wood) – 3:30 "I Only Want To Be With You" – 3:36 "Yesterday's Hero" (Vanda, Young) – 4:33 "My Lisa" (T.Scutio, S.Egorin) – 3:35 "Don't Worry Baby" (B.Wilson, R.Christian) – 3:03 "Are You Cuckoo?" (Russ Ballard) – 4:05 "Write A Letter" (Wood, McKeown, Mitchell) – 3:47 "Dedication" (Fletcher, Flett) – 3:54 For the first time, a Bay City Rollers album was released simultaneously in the US and UK, albeit with two tracks differing between the two versions. Alan Longmuir was out of the group and Ian Mitchell was in (briefly) and Clive Davis was now micro-managing the group, forcing an American producer on them and lots of cover songs. The album has a slicker, more American-ized sound and as a result, some of the magic of the group's first three UK albums is lost. But it's still a good album, with a wacky, steel-drum tinged cover of the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby." It's a hoot! First pressings of the album had "Dedication" sung by Ian Mitchell. Mitchell left shortly after Dedication's release and his vocal was re-recorded by Les McKeown for subsequent pressings and a single release.

While not a huge fan, I really dug Yesterdays Hero and RnR Love Letter. Money Honey was a fave as well and of course Saturday Night. Guess I'm a bigger fan than I though since thats about half the first Greatest Hits!

I have RNRLL - I've always loved "La Belle Jeane" since I saw it on TV way back when.
