This just in, the San Francisco 49ers told the city of San Francisco tonight that they intend to move following the breakdown of talks for a new football stadium in San Francisco. Possible locations are Santa Clara, where the team's headquarters and practice field is, Los Angeles, or any other location in California willing to build them a world class stadium.

While moving to San Jose would definitely keep the Niners in the Bay Area, I would not rule out Los Angeles. It's no secret that the NFL wants a team back in that city, even if the fans there hardly seem heartbroken the way Brooklyn was when the Dodgers left. If the Niners were to move to LA, that would save the NFL the trouble of expanding again. Hope I'm wrong, but I think the Santa Clara proposal may be a front to move the team to L.A.

(Here's an interesting thought. If the Niners move to LA but the Raiders still can't, do the Raiders move to San Francisco?)

Looks like I am wrong. The press release says the Niners do not intend to change their name, and for now are only looking at cities in the Bay Area. Looks like they know the way to San José...

If they moved to LA they would have to change their name. Hope they do stay in the bay area. 49ers is very much tied to the city of San Francisco, even before there was a football team of that name. Unlike Lakers, which while it makes very little sense for a team in LA, doesn't carry that type of "brand recognition".

Latest I heard on ESPN was that they are moving but will continue to be the San Francisco 49ers.

Plus, it was alliterative.
