This is a must buy for me.

From jonimitchell.com:

" Sep 18: Rare Greenpeace recording out soon
In November, Greenpeace will release "AMCHITKA", a 2-CD set of a benefit concert that was performed by Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, the late Phil Ochs and Chilliwack in Vancouver, Canada, on October 16, 1970. The $18,000 raised at that time enabled Greenpeace to launch its first action, sailing a fishing trawler to Amchitka Island in the Aleutians to protest underground nuclear weapons tests. Stay tuned for details on how to purchase the CD."

Here's more from americansongwriter.com,

"On November 10, Greenpeace Canada will release an exclusive two-disc live album dubbed Amchitka, the 1970 Concert That Launched Greenpeace. That concert, an anti-nuke fundraiser held in protest of the government’s nuclear bomb testing in Amchitka, Alaska, featured inspired performances by folk music icons Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. Also featured is Phil Ochs, the cult figure and protest singer who took his own life in 1976.

A press release shed’s some light on the historic occasion: “The concert, which took place at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia on 16 October 1970, was organized by former trial lawyer and activist Irving Stowe. As co-director of the Don’t Make A Wave Committee, he raised enough money to send 11 peace activists by boat, christened The Greenpeace, to the Aleutian Island of Amchitka. The activists were unsuccessful in stopping the tests, but their voyage in 1971 marks the birth of the worldwide organization known today as Greenpeace.”

“The Amchitka voyage would not have happened without the concert, and so we owe a debt of gratitude to Irving Stowe, and the talents of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs for generating the momentum that ultimately launched Greenpeace,” says Bruce Cox, Greenpeace Canada’s executive director. “The activists that traveled to Amchitka set the example that has guided and defined Greenpeace: non-violent direct action to protect our environment and motivate societal change.”

& finally from Greenpeace Canada:

"Toronto, Canada — Greenpeace Canada is set to release an exclusive two-disc, re-mastered live recording Amchitka, the 1970 concert that launched Greenpeace, featuring Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and the late Phil Ochs. The concert, a fundraiser to protest U.S. nuclear bomb tests near Amchitka, Alaska sees a first-time release on 10 November. The CD is available exclusively through Greenpeace and all proceeds will benefit the organization.
“We are pleased to offer this musical slice of history to Greenpeace supporters and music lovers around the world,” said Bruce Cox, Greenpeace Canada’s executive director. “This CD is a piece of musical magic. It contains never before heard songs, duets and chatter that capture the confidence and hope of the times. It carries a timeless message that change is possible.”

The concert, which took place at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia on 16 October 1970, was organized by former trial lawyer and activist Irving Stowe. The upcoming release features concert performances by then-rising Canadian star Joni Mitchell and a 22-year old James Taylor. Protest singer, Phil Ochs kicks off the CD. Earlier that year Mitchell had been named Top Female Performer of 1970 by Melody Maker magazine and Taylor had released his major breakthrough album Sweet Baby James.

Of the historic concert, Amchitka emcee and Canadian broadcaster, Terry David Mulligan says, “The crew of ‘The Greenpeace’ took hold of our hearts and minds and pulled all of us along. As always, music carried the day.”

Greenpeace is an independently funded organization that works to protect the environment. The organization challenges government and industry to halt harmful practices by negotiating solutions, conducting scientific research, introducing clean alternatives, carrying out peaceful acts of civil disobedience and educating and engaging the public. If I understand correctly, it's going to be offered on Greenpeace Canada's site.

Thanks for the tracklisting. I'll be buying this primarily for the Joni, but I'll give the rest of it a shot, too.

I hope it's reasonably priced, but this one is a must for me. I wish Ochs would have done a different setlist but.......

I don't see any Chilliwack on the tracklisting. Must be after the Joni Mitchell, since there are a lot fewer tracks listed than disc one.

I was hoping it would be a little cheaper (especially the shipping), but at least Maple Music is reputable (after my awful still ongoing experience with Concert Live on the Mott reunion).

Ordered, thanks for the tip!

Pay Pal wasn't very kind on the exchange rate, it came to $26.69 USD.

Actually that's pretty good...at the 'official' wholesale exchange rate, it converts to $26.00, so you only paid a little over 2% more. I've seen a lot higher premiums for small, retail transactions.

I guess the exchange rate is worse then I thought. Per Currencysource.com the actual rate should have been $26.06. So Pay Pal hit me $0.63 (2.4%)

I got mine today. haven't played it yet. WARNING: It's in cheesy cardboard packaging. Fortunately the discs are not scratched, HOWEVER, instead of shrinkwrap they sealed the cardboard packaging with TAPE. It's an easier type to remove then scotch tape, but it still put a nice tear in the cover. For $28 I am pissed.

I sent the following email to both Greenpeace & Maple Music:

I don't know if I need to send this complaint to Maple Music or to
Greenpeace, but I am very unhappy with the packaging for AMCHITKA. The
cardboard cover was sealed with a piece of tape. When I slowly &
carefully removed the tape, it tore the cover. For the $28 CAD I paid,
that's not acceptable.

I'd appreciate a replacement package. Amazingly the discs are not
scratched from the cheap cardboard, so I just need a new package, not
the cd's.

Thank You,

Thanks for posting. That has definitely turned me off of buying it. They couldn't have just used a paper sleeve inside the cardboard ala Beatles Mono box?

I was able to get the adhesive seal off of mine without damaging the case.

The music sounds really good, by the way. The quality is not superb, but it's a decent live recording for the time, and it's nice to have some live stuff from what was a prime period for both Taylor and Mitchell. (I admit I haven't even listened to the Ochs cuts yet.)

I'm about 2/3 through the Joni (the main reason i bought this). Decent show, but imo, the sound's just adequate. I know this is a charity cd, but i feel ripped off for $28.

I would have been pleased if I'd bought this as a lossless download for $13 (i.e.Wolfgang's Vault), but at $28 I do feel ripped off.

Playing the Phil Ochs now. Sound is much worse. The tape was damaged; in fact it sounds like a cassette where the edges of the tapes are slightly bent (the highs & upper mids drop in & out), + dropouts. For the price, this is really disappointing.

I just played mine today as well. The recording was OK. I was also disappointed by the decision to "seal" it with a sticker on cardboard. Fortunately, I as able to remove my sticker without any noticeable damage to the packaging.

Does anyone know why Chilliwack doesn't appear on this CD set?

According to the notes in the CD booklet, Chilliwack refused permission for their set to be recorded.
