Van Halen Among Rock Hall Nominees
Van Halen have been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time, despite being eligible for the past few years. The hard-rock veterans are among a list of nine nominees that also includes R.E.M., Patti Smith and the Stooges.

Five inductees will be revealed in January, and an induction ceremony will take place March 12 at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel.

R.E.M., Van Halen, the Stooges and Patti Smith are among the nine acts on the ballot for the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, to be held March 12 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Also on the ballot are the Dave Clark Five, Chic, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Joe Tex and the Ronettes.

Five artists will be chosen for the final list of inductees, to be announced in January. To be eligible for induction, the 2007 class had to release their first single no later than 1981.

Black Sabbath, the Sex Pistols, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blondie, Miles Davis and record moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were enshrined in the Hall earlier this year.

I couldn't agree more about ALL these great artists. And what about KISS??? They changed everything!
Ridiculous.
Can't wait until all the Rappers go in-and that WILL happen. Sickening.
I'd also add Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Toto, Gary Numan, Peter Gabriel-ah, why am I bothering?

One band that was nominated (but not inducted) years ago and which really deserves to be in the HOF is the Meters. Even though they only had a couple hits in their day, they did a significant amount of session work and are frequently cited as influences by almost every funk musician alive. On top of that, their drummer has (reportedly) been sampled by more rappers than any other drummer. I'm no rap fan myself, but I have to say that a stat like that sure seems like justification for calling a musican "influencial." And isn't that one of the HOF's criteria?

To Renny: I share your sentiments regarding the Hollies and the DC5, but the fact is that DC5 was actually bigger in the US than the Hollies. I was only three when the Beatles first arrived in the US, so I don't recall the British Invasion personally, but some older friends have told me that the DC5 was almost as popular as the Beatles at one point. (According to the Wikipedia, DC5 was "the second group of the 'British Invasion' after The Beatles to have a chart hit in America ('Glad All Over' #6 January 1964)." For sure, the HOF isn't always about which bands are BETTER.

I once read that the all-time most sampled clip is the drum break from Tommy Roe's "Sweet Pea." It wouldn't surprise me if that were still true.

I think REM and Patti Smith should get in. I was pleasantly surprised by the DC5 nomination. As they were my first love(musically speaking), I hope they will make it.

Among bands mentioned, I think Yes, Procol Harum, and Genesis, at their best, made pieces of music that are as good as anyone ever made.(I will include King Crimson in there as well).
I'm not a Van Halen fan, but I can't make a strong argument for their exclusion.

Kiss Fans Protest Rock Hall of Fame Snub

Aug 6, 4:43 AM EST

The Associated Press

About 200 Kiss fans protested Saturday in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to demand that the band be inducted into the hall.

Fans, some from as far away as California, carried signs and had painted their faces in black-and-white to resemble Kiss band members.

Those participating in the half-hour demonstration were upset that the band, formed more than 30 years ago, has not been admitted, even though it has been eligible since the late 1990s.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, according to the museum's Web site.

"Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll," the site says.

A museum spokesman said it was the first demonstration by fans seeking to have a group inducted.

The foundation that selects inductees is based in New York City, not at the museum.

I've never really been a Kiss fan, but hard to blame the fans for showing so much passion for their artist or group.

Now... if I could only find and gather up 200 Moody Blues or Cat Stevens fans... :sigh:

I remember a few years ago, as a bit on Late Night With Conan O'Brian, Andy Richter tried to organize a protest because Thin Lizzie hadn't been inducted.

The fans protest this every year. I'm a KISS fan, but I don't get worked up about the "snub" because I know that it's Jann Wenner and his Rolling Stone mafia that determines who gets in.

If they don't like you, you don't get in. KISS is in some very good company in this regard.

I thought I read a couple of years back, that the HOF wanted KISS to contribute some memorabilia and Gene Simmons wanted $$$$ for it. Don't know how true that was though...

I don't know either, but I do know that Gene $immons tries to get paid for everything, so it's not entirely impossible.

so, if they do get in because of fans demonstrating outside the building, is that something to be proud of?

Well I have heard that they care less if they get in or not, and I'm inclined to agree with that. It would be nice, but its meaningless

Sounds fair to me. They've always been about the fans, and have always said "Rolling Stone didn't get it, and they still don't"

As of five years ago when I saw Gene's spoken word tour, Kiss had generated a half-billion dollars. And how much have they made since then?

I imagine that - and selling out major venues everywhere - would be more important

When AC/DC were put forward as possible nominees, I can remember them being on TV, laughing about it and calling it the 'Hall Of Shame'. They seemed to think it was a big joke.

I'm not sure how seriously anyone takes it. Shows how far the RRHOF have removed themselves from the people who actually listen to rock music, though. The fans aren't as important as the critics, apparently.

The R&R Hall of fame is so important that it gets tv exposure......2 nights later....severely edited down(and watered down)...and broadcast on VH1- the home of great music and videos.....well, not so much anymore.....ok the home of crappy reality tv and crappy music related movies. Why right now they are showing "Hogan Knows Best" or "Breaking Bonaduce", so yes this network is serious about its music and the R&R Hall of fame is just another crappy reality show.

By the way, my cable company doesnt offer VH1classic, but I was wondering if the people who get that channel should expect that within 5 years or so they will start seeing "classic" episodes of "Flava of Love" and "Celebrity Fit Club" and the like......

Oh yeah, we worry man! I'm part of a great community of Music Video fans that post each and every day VH1 Classic's playlists so we know what we missed (or didn't need to see) and the message board is always rightfully complaining about some of the dreaded "programming" that has aired so far. We do fear for the worst in a few years.
For the most part, it's still 85% good but painfully with very few rare adds anymore-but every now and then they shock you with a great add.
They have been great with the BBC Rock Jewels series of 70s concerts so far-the Joe Jackson Band one this week from 1979 was amazing and they're showing a Neil Young show this week.
