Quote: BEACH BOYS PLANNING REUNION GIG TO CELEBRATE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF 'PET SOUNDS'
Founding Beach Boy Al Jardine has announced what many Beach Boys fans have been hoping for -- an onstage reunion featuring himself with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston.
In a world exclusive, Jardine revealed to us that plans are in the works for the group to reform later this year in London, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of their 1966 Pet Sounds album. Jardine said that if all goes well, a possible reunion tour might follow: "Actually, a reunion tour is not out of the question, because with this Pet Sounds anniversary coming up, it's a very good possibility that we'll be performing it live in London in November. It would be like a Pet Sounds reunion. Mike is open to it and Brian appears to be open to it and you never know what might spring from that. So if (a reunion tour) is in the cards, we'll do it. You never know. It might just work. "
Jardine and Brian Wilson have been in various legal battles with Love over the past few years, and have not performed with the group since 1998 and 1996, respectively. Love and Johnston continue to tour under the Beach Boys name.
Conspicuously absent from the reunion is Beach Boys co-founder David Marks, who has been performing joint gigs with Jardine over the course of the past year. Jardine explained that although Marks was a co-founder and played a crucial part in most of the group's early recordings, the reunion show would only feature group members who participated in the actual Pet Sounds sessions. Marks quit the group in November 1963 after performing on their first five albums.
Jardine did not give a date when the concert plans would be finalized, who would be backing the group onstage, or when the concert would be announced.
Pet Sounds, which was released on May 16th, 1966, featured such Beach Boys classics as "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Sloop John B.," "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," and "God Only Knows."
Jardine and David Marks will team up with Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean for the "Cruisin' With The Legends Of Surf Music" cruise, set for October 2nd through 6th. http://www.b104fm.com/rock_report.htm

...Beach Boys co-founder David Marks...
Inaccurate. Founding members: Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson (D), Dennis Wilson (D), Mike Love. All but Al were related. Al was a high school friend of Brian. After a few initial recordings (including the very first ones, hence founder tag), Al dropped out to go to college. David Marks, friend of one of the late Wilson brothers (I don't remember which off the top of my head) was brought in to replace Al and stayed until Al's eventual return. Bruce Johnston, the only other official Beach Boy other than the founders and David Marks, came on as Brian's touring replacement. Pet Sounds was the first recording he sang with them on. And Marks didn't quit. Brian's father fired him.
They need either Brian's Wondermints-based backing band or one or both of Al's sons just to have enough people to sing all the parts. Brian's band can certainly play all the songs, as Brian did a Pet Sounds tour all by himself.

What an interesting opening act.
A couple of years ago I saw the Smile show and I had a blast. I don't know that BW is that much of a performer anymore - it's more like he sings and adds his aura to the proceedings - but the band clearly loves doing his music and it comes through.

I've seen Brian live 14 times. I don't really go to hear Brian sing, I go to see him sit there, living legend that he is!

I sincerely hope before he and / or I shuffle off this mortal coil that I get to see him in concert.

I only recently discovered Pet Sounds about a year ago. For me it was one of those things you hear about the brilliance of all your life and then when you finally sit down to it, you get it immediately and go "Oh, he is a genius, isn't he?"

I'm a huge Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan, but Pet Sounds isn't the work of his that really does it for me. I'd much rather listen to Holland, or Today, or Sunflower. I think the best song he ever wrote was "The Little Girl I Once Knew."
That said, I saw him a few years ago when he was opening for Paul Simon, and I wasn't there for Paul Simon, let me tell you.

Brian Wilson opening for Paul Simon? Should have been the other way round!

Blondie singing lead on "Wild Honey", apparently in an effort to save Carl's voice. It sounds better suited to him, anyway.
Dennis and Ricky both on drums, Carl on electric piano, Mike on Theremin, Al on rhythm guitar.
Just stumbled upon it, thought I'd share.

Just think, there are still seven surviving Beach Boys: Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, David, Blondie, and Ricky. I know Carl is irreplacable and Dennis is a great loss too, but if there ever is a reunion, I'd like to see the remaining seven all on stage at the same time! I don't think there has ever been more than six Beach Boys on stage at the same time. BTW, Blondie has a new CD out, available from his website.

May as well throw Daryl Dragon into the mix, too. I just spotted him watching that clip again.

Daryl Dragon - wasn't he the "Captain" in Captain and Tennille?

Let's have Glen Campbell too! He was a Beach Boy for six months.

What about Jesse from Full House? I thought he played with them for awhile. With Rebecca gone, John probably has a lot of time on his hands now.

With Rebecca gone, time is probably not all John has on his hands right now. I love a lot of Beach Boy music, but I absolutely can not stand Mike Love. I have not paid attention to them since Carl died.
