Do you remember your feelings at the time about Kirby returning to Marvel after so long? (I know he actually came back 6 months earlier with Captain America, but you know what I mean...)
As I recall, Jack's first few CAPs had already gone on sale when I came to work at Marvel...and a lot of fans were hot and bothered because the series read differently than it had under Steve Englehart. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't get what Jack was doing...then. I'll admit that even I didn't appreciate the stories then as much as I do now. Yeah, some of Jack's dialogue could be a little
outre, but with Kirby you have to look at the work as a whole.
The Eternals had some great work. I wish it hadn't been integrated into the Marvel Universe -- it would have been stronger set in a world of it's own.
And it was absolutely amazing to hold Jack's penciled pages in my hands. Talk about not being worthy.
But I think Machine Man was my favorite.
