No other info, just MusicTAP's word. Hope it at least measures up to the 1979 6-LP box I've been looking for on eBay.

Product Description
Long awaited 2009 six CD box set from the influential Rock 'n' Roll legend containing all of his official studio recordings. The 203 tracks range from his earliest recordings when 12 to 15 years old to demos with Bob Montgomery; from his earliest recordings with The Crickets and a set of garage recordings to his first studio recordings for Decca in Nashville; from the Coral and Brunswick recordings and hits that made him famous to his heralded apartment tapes. There are 6 previously unreleased tracks, including most of an August 1955 session, plus another 11 recordings previously unreleased in the U.S. Furthermore, all of the original, locatable undubbed original recordings are here as well as all 57 of the overdubbed versions recorded both in New York City and Clovis months and even years after the 'day the music died.'

So much stuff has appeared since the 6-LP box was released. Hip-O now has to compete with Purple Chick's 10-CD set and I don't see how that is going to be very possible. Yeah, Hip-O should be able to top PC in terms of sound quality, but it doesn't seem feasable to release a 10-disc box set with the economy the way it is.

How much more could exist beyond the two couple disc sets that came out early this year?

LIMITED EDITION QUANITITY: 7000

The great and highly influential Buddy Holly had a relatively brief three year professional recording career. However, because of his enormous talent, enthusiasm for music, and the fortunate emergence of recording tape while he was quite young, we have been left with a vast recorded legacy of 203 tracks that fill out the six CDs of this new limited edition Hip-O Select box set, “Not Fade Away/The Complete Studio Recordings And More.”

Furthermore, all of the original, locatable undubbed original recordings are here as well as all 57 of the overdubbed versions recorded both in New York City and Clovis months and even years after the “day the music died.” Many of these recordings are also hard-to-find or are making their CD debut, having only appeared on the 1979 LP/cassette box set .

The music on “Not Fade Away” is packaged in a yearbook size 80 page book, featuring numerous rare photos and session-by-session recording information. There are also two sets of liner notes: “Legacy” by Billy Altman, which puts Buddy’s career in perspective, and “The Music” by Bill Dahl, a lengthy tome that traces the music session by session. Consultant for this project is noted Holly historian Bill Griggs, with special thanks to Maria Elena Holly. “Not Fade Away” was produced by Universal’s Andy McKaie.

Didn't Buddy Holly only release two full albums in his career??

They certainly found a lot of stuff if they could fill 6 CDs!!

Here's a question: I'm a casual Buddy Holly fan -- I have the two Hoffman-mastered comps from the '80s and that's it.

Would something like this all-inclusive studio box be good for me or would I better off just getting the two albums he released during his short time around that were recently remastered?

I would say that if you are a casual fan and rarely listen to the Holly cds you have, then you're probably fine keeping those(or buying the reasonably priced remastered cds ) and just spending that money on weapons of destruction for your evil abode.

I'll be so glad to have this just so I can have the undubbed songs from the Apartment Tapes. I'd first heard those on an old Holly collection(cassette) that had a brick wall on the cover with the words BUDDY HOLLY LIVES in graffiti and since then I've bought those tracks on cd compilations only to find they were overdubbed by The Fireballs and totally ruined. I didn't buy last year's Memorial Collection, so I don't know if those tracks were undubbed there.

Thanks, Zane. I like some Holly songs, but like you said, I rarely listen to the Holly comps I do have, so this would probably be a waste of money for me. But it does sound like a great collection for a Holly fanatic and/or completist, so it's good to see Hip-O-Select doing something like this to keep the music alive.

I will be getting this boxset. Buddy Holly in my book is in the top 10 rockers of all-time. Picking up the collections released earlier this year only really wetted my appetite for this.

I've been waiting for years for a cd equivalent of the 1979 vinyl box set(along with the tracks that had been discovered since then). I haven't done a side by side tracklist comparison, but I'm pretty sure this set is going to fit the bill!

I guess there is no need to buy those 2CD sets released earlier this year, then? This box has got the whole shebang.

I was just looking at a tracklist for that "complete" 1979 box and this new set has tons more than the old set. It has everything the old set had except for the tracks Holly produced for others, the live recordings from the Ed Sullivan Show plus 3 Holly radio interviews. I already have those nonessential items on the final disc of the Purple Chick Holly set and only listened to that once.

A couple weeks ago, there was a thread discussing our future CD purchases and I said that I'd be buying no more this year because the Beatles discs depleted my CD-buying budget. Well, I have to take that back because there is NO way I'll pass on a Buddy Holly box like this, even though I'm sure most (if not all) of it was issued by Purple Chick. And, yes, Goog. There is no need for the two sets that were released earlier this year if one buys this boxed set.

This is already up on Amazon, faster than usual, and it's already cheaper there too. Could someone drop the proper link in this post, I'm not sure how we're supposed to tag imwan.

I did get the two 2CD (actually one of them is 3CD) sets earlier this year (for a decent price at a street fair booth), so I probably won't get this. I also have a Vigotone boot of the apartment tapes that was issued a number of years ago.

Speaking of the apartment tapes, the actual apartment where they wer recorded is at 11 Fifth Avenue, NYC 10003 (the "Brevoort" apartment building), which is 1 block from Discorama!

I agree with Zane 100%, this box reminds me of a Bear Family set with regards to looks and the all-inclusive content. It is really for the Buddy Holly fanatic or for a casual fan with a lot of money to burn. :ohyes:
