Foo Fighters Ready Two New Songs For 'Greatest Hits'

by Gary Graff, Detroit | August 28, 2009 3:48 EDT

Foo Fighters will commemorate the group's 15th anniversary with the Nov. 3 release of "Foo Fighters Greatest Hits" on Roswell/RCA. The group recorded two new songs for the set -- "Word Forward" and "Wheels," which the quartet debuted at a July 4 barbecue honoring military heroes at the White House -- with producer Butch Vig at the Foos' own 606 studio. They'll join Grammy Award-winning songs such as "The Pretender," "All My Life" and "Learn To Fly," along with "Best Of You," "Times Like These," "My Hero, "Everlong" and others.

The release of "Greatest Hits" will come at a time the individual Foos are dispersed to other projects. Founder and leader Dave Grohl is working with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Josh Home of Queens of the Stone Age in Them Crooked Vultures, whose debut album is due out in October. And bassist Nate Mendel is touring with the reunited Sunny Day Real Estate, which is also releasing remastered versions of 1994's "Diary" and 1995's "LP2," each with two bonus tracks.

Mendel tells Billboard.com that the Foos' hiatus is "kind of open-ended. We were pretty much planning to take this year off and start writing. This fall or winter we'll probably start writing new Foo Fighters stuff."

Mendel, meanwhile, is spending his time gearing up for the Sunny Day Real Estate tour, which kicks off Sept. 17 in Vancouver. "It's fun to do something different. You need some variety," Mendel says. "I've always loved those two Sunny Day records that I played on...and I like the other musicians in the band, so I wanted to just get together and re-live the whole experience."

But Mendel and his Sunny Day are "on egg shells" about whether the reunion will lead to new music from the group. "Any old wounds from the past, no one wants to bring them up," he explains. "We just want to focus on positive things, and you start writing new songs and that opens up a whole new can of worms. And those of us that are still playing in bands are pretty busy, too.

"One thing I didn't know before we start this and I know now is we could make another record. We get along. We still have a connection that would allow us to make music. So if the will and time is there, it's a possibility at least."

As for Grohl's endeavor, Mendel says he started hearing about the group earlier this year and has had a chance to see Them Crooked Vultures in the studio. "They're great," Mendel says, adding with a laugh that "it's a different dynamic, though. It's interesting to see (Grohl) not being in charge."

I was wondering when they'd get to one as they have racked up an impressive career to date with a crapload of hits. I'm a casual fan so I'd like to get this (I burned my own disc of all their covers, and there's plenty).
As a band with so many clever, hilarious, well-directed videos a DVD should be included (although I think I have all but 2 of their videos anyway) as a no-brainer. Hope this isn't one of those chincy 12 song best-of which is why people make their own comps as record labels continue to suck ass at putting together accurate compilations.

It would be nice if they offered a 2 CD edition that would include rarities and B-sides.

As with most bands, their hits are sometimes nowhere near being their best songs. Any Foos "best of" without My Poor Brain is incomplete.

Yeah! Good to see there will be a DVD-but they have a ton of videos, and I KNOW they will skip many of them because, well, we know the labels don't what they're doing.

Really like the new single "Wheels" although it is much more Pop than fans are probably used to. Anyway, the DVD is surprisingly very strong, missin only a few videos and at 13.99 this package is a no-brainer for me.

DVD Track Listing:
1.I'll Stick Around
2.Big Me
3.Monkey Wrench
4.Everlong
5.My Hero
6.Walking After You
7.Learn To Fly
8.Next Year
9.All My Life
10.Times Like These
11.Low
12.Best Of You
13.DOA
14.Resolve
15.The Pretender
16.Long Road To Ruin
17.Wheels
18.Everlong (live from Everywhere But Home)
19.Breakout (live from Hyde Park)
20.Skin And Bones (live from Skin And Bones)
21.All My Life (live from Wembley)

yes, this flew under the radar. Thought it would be big news this week since this is one of those groups that lacked a good hits package. And to think it was a Tuesday and we thought why go to a store, nothing of real value came out. Boo.

Nice grab IP! I ended up getting the CD/DVD at BB today. Actually it was the 3rd BB that Ilooked for it. They had a space for it, but they were pretty much gone (and they were lite on th cd version as well). I grabbed the last one at the BB I found it at. I have a feeling this release is going to show pretty good business this week. It is a band well overdue for a GH (I don't have any of their discs - but I always thought they were one of the more consistent hit making bands of the 90s).

Yeah, I was shocked to find it at 9.99-might have been a mistake but they confirmed shipping it today. I've always liked this band, but only own the Colour And The Shape remaster which is great. I'd been hoping for a best-of for a long time, but this one is missing songs and damn, they had space for at least 3 or 4 more songs as it clocks in it at 64 minutes which is lame.
The Foos have had so many hits (including radio hits) they could actually have a 2CD best-of. And, although there are a ton of videos, some are still missing. But overall, an excellent package especially for 9.99! Anybody thinking about it should order it now at that price I used the Amazon.com link from here-hope that helped as I spent 27.00 total).

The DVD alone is worth $9.99, I would not pass this up. I thought I got a great deal at $12.99.

Book-style packaging looks nice on the outside, though the discs are housed in glued on sleeves on the inside covers. Take the bad with the good in this case.

Only listened to the CD once so far, and I actually had to turn it up from what I had been listening to (Radiohead - OK Computer Deluxe Set Disc 2). Take it for what it is worth, I don't do waveforms.

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl: 'A 'Greatest Hits' is like a band 'obituary''

November 4, 2009

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl has said he believes his band's recently-released 'Greatest Hits' album is "premature", comparing such releases to an "obituary" for a band.

The frontman told BBC Newsbeat that the album, released on Monday (November 2), was simply the product of their contract with their record label SonyBMG and suggested that he wasn't entirely happy with the tracklist.

"It still seems premature because we're still a functioning, active band," he said. "Those things can look like an obituary. We were asked to do this a long time ago. We wrote it into a deal a long time ago – that's how it works."

He added: "They [Sony] started asking about four years ago, and we said, 'Don't we need some hits?' It's like a CliffsNotes [study guides] version of what we've been doing for the last 15 years. I think there are better songs than some of those."

He's got a point - how many other popular bands have never done a proper best-of besides AC/DC?
