From NME: The Stooges get to work on new album
The reformed Stooges have begun working on their new album with Nirvana producer Steve Albini.
The band are working at Albini's Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago.
It will be the group's first album of new material since 1973's 'Raw Power'.
The line up will consist of Iggy Pop, bassist Mike Watt, drummer Scott Asheton and guitarist Ron Asheton.
According to Billboard, new tracks expected to appear on the as yet untitled album include 'Mexican Guy', 'Trollin', 'Greedy Awful People', 'Claustrophobia', 'ATM', 'O Solo Mio', 'She Took My Money', 'End Of Christianity' and 'I'm Fried'.
The Raconteurs' Brendon Benson is believed to be making a guest appearance.
Pop said of writing with original member Ron Asheton: "All the same passions and problems are there. But the problems are in a more muted style. I'm still the show-off in the group that gets all the attention. Everyone has their role. It's pretty much the way it was in high school."
A release date for the album is yet to be announced.
Edited to add ~ The Stooges' reunion album has been released and is being discussed on our New Releases board here: http://www.imwan.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8815

I once dreamed that the Three Stooges agreed to star in a movie I wanted to make. And I've never even seen a Three Stooges movie! That's star quality.

This thread reminds me of the old ICE board. It starts off as a thread about Iggy Pop and transmogrifies into one about The Three Stooges.
Of course, I did instigate it.

From Billboard.com some cool news...
Iggy Pop and the Stooges have just wrapped their first studio album since 1973. The as-yet-untitled disc is due in March via Virgin and was recorded with engineer Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. Bassist Mike Watt filled in for the late Dave Alexander, while Brendan Benson contributed vocals to "Free and Freaky."
"The one thing that kind of amazes me is that it sounds like us," Pop tells Billboard.com. "But it doesn't sound quite like 'Fun House,' 'Raw Power' or our first one. You put it on, and right away, you'd know, well, that's them. There they go." The 16-track set will feature such songs as "Trollin'," "ATM," "You Can't Have Friends," "My Idea of Fun," "The Weirdness" and "Greedy Awful People."
After songwriting sessions at Pop's Miami cabin earlier this year, the group hit the studio and tracked nearly everything live "except for two vocals, which I f****d up," says Pop. "The guitar overdubs are confined to leads or a very audible melody counterpart, or a rhythmic answering part. There's no quadruple-tracked rhythm stacks or any of that crap."
"At times, [the songs have] a lot of going for the fences," he continues. "But there's a great deal of structure and attention to detail. We were very prepared, and we always have been any time we stepped into a studio. Even the song 'L.A. Blues, the last cut on 'Fun House,' was pretty much exactly what you would have heard if you'd seen us live the week before we recorded it."
Pop admits being in the studio with the Asheton brothers after a three-decade hiatus rekindled some bad memories of the band's demise. "Some of it is exciting and some of it is scary, and I don't care to go over there," he says. "But at the end of the day, I know these guys. I don't know anybody else quite that way."
The Stooges will master the album at London's famed Abbey Road Studios next month while in the United Kingdom to perform at the Nightmare Before Christmas festival. A spring tour is being lined up, including a March 17 show at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The group is also on the ballot for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next spring, and Pop promises to do "something really f***ing cool" if the Stooges make the grade.
So what has changed since the Stooges' heyday, when Pop was known to carve himself up with shards of glass and antagonize the audience? "We have a civilized aspect to us now," he chuckles. "I mean, a lot of my life is lived as an elderly gentleman of means. And that suits me just fine. But then there's the other part..."

Here 'tis, out tomorrow:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MTDRJU/?tag=imwan-20
(FWIW ... Amazon's first reviewer savaged this album, but I heard it and feel just the opposite. The guys sound like they're still in their 20s, it's wonderfully raw, messy and loud. Maybe not up to the standards of their original albums but they gave it a REALLY good shot.)

Glad to hear that! My friend didn't like it much but I'm still getting it. I'm surprised at the lack of attention this is getting. I hope to see them in Philly if I can talk someone into going with me (the wife said only if I change the cat litter for one month would she go-I hope I get a better offer, but this is looking like the best so far. I do feed the guys and take the litter out, but luckily that excuses me from the worst deed. So far. Ugh!).

A Wednesday in Philly is a no can do for me, even for the stooges.
I did see Ashton with Watt and J Mascis about 5 years ago.

>> Iggy Pop apologises for controversial comments
20.Jul.07 10:36am
Iggy Pop has apologised for making controversial comments at Glastonbury.
He was quoted as using the phrase "Paki shop" while speaking on television at the festival.
"I'm sorry," Pop said last night (July 19) in an exclusive video interview with NME.COM backstage at the Benicassim festival in Spain. "It was one in the morning [when I said it]... that was a phrase I learned from English people while I was living there. But it's terrible. More fool me. Shame on me."
Pop went on to talk about two Iggy and the Stooges biopics currently in production, one of which is set to feature Elijah Wood as the singer.
"At the moment neither of them have my permission to be made," Pop declared. "Frankly I wish they'd both fuck off and leave their biopics." <<

It would be worth it just to hear "Dirt" live.I can only imagine what "L.A. Blues" will sound like live.I wonder if they will play the rare 45RPM version of "Down On The Street" with Don Galucci on Keyboards?
