Exciting news in the new Rolling Stone about a Tom Petty release called " The Live Anthology " due out in early November. It will come in a 4 disc box, priced under $ 25.00 and a deluxe package for about $ 100.00 that includes a fifth cd as well as a bonus DVD, a vinyl EP of 1976 club dates and a Blu-Ray disc packed with every track in super-high fidelity and 5.1 mixes.
[bigred]Standard Edition[/bigred] Product Description The Live Anthology is a multiple-disc set of recordings drawn from thirty years of live performances. The collection brings together material from 1978-2007 culled from hundreds of hours of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tours and represents the best tracks as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.
The producers made no fixes or overdubs, letting the newly mixed original recordings showcase the invention, spontaneity, craft, and the musicianship that has made Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers among the most celebrated live performers of their time. Along with powerful interpretations of their own classic hits and originals, The Live Anthology features the band tackling some of their best-loved cover material, from classics to obscure beauties to unexpected adaptations. The theme from Goldfinger, the Zombies' 'I Want You Back Again,' the Grateful Dead's 'Friend of the Devil,' early Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well,' Booker T. and the MGs' 'Green Onions,' James Brown's 'Good, Good Lovin' and many more. Wow! For only $75 extra I can get a vinyl LP I'll never play and a blu-ray disc I can't play!! I can remember when Tom Petty fought to keep the list price down to $8.98 on his Hard Promises album. I guess Tom's saving for retirement or something.

Wow! I'm all over the Deluxe Edition... Hopefully music on Blu-ray will get off the ground. Neil Young may have pissed a lot of people off with Archives, but I really want to see the Blu-ray format embraced for music... so thank you Neil and thank you Tom.

I'm waiting to hear of a Blu-Ray player with a truly audiophile analog stage. I've been reading quite a bit about the Opps the last couple days since my d/a fried, & the consensus on the regular dvd players amongst high end folks is that the audio stage isn't actually all that good. I haven't read as much on the Blu-Ray, but it's only $200 more which limits parts quality differences..

I can understand the gripe about price point and vinyl, but why knock what you have not yet experienced. I have the Neil Young Archives Box in the BluRay format and it is awesome. The sound quality is incredible and the interactive experience as well.I am hoping more artist go the route of BluRay releases. As long as they take advantage of the Hi Rez,multichannel and interactive capabilities, it's worth the premium.

I'm PROBABLY going to have to stick to the 4 cd version for $'s reasons, especially if it's only $25 as stated above.

Why is everybody bitching about the deluxe edition? It sounds like a really nice package to me... It's the price. $25 for four CDs is a great deal. But $75 for the extra stuff is sticking it to the fans. Make a CD/DVD package for the average consumer at a reasonable price and the deluxe for the collectors at a slightly higher price. If fans continue to buy these expensive deluxes, they'll make more of them. That might be an enticement for some, but some of us aren't made of money and need to make our purchases more judiciously.

A Blu Ray disc can't be that expensive to manufacture as they're already dropping to the $10 range for sale or older titles.

I know vinyl is making a comeback but how many people have a turntable and will be able to appreciate the EP in this package? They usually don't pack these CDs full and may have been able to fit the vinyl portion on the 5th disc or the Blu-Ray. In order to get your money's worth, you need four pieces of electronic equipment, two of which you may not have That may be excessive.

Nobody is bitching about the content (except the stupid vinyl and the Blu-Ray being forced upon the buyer-there is no other option), but the price as Chris said. In today's miserable economic climate especially, anybody has the right to bitch. And, whether it's $100 or the buyer-friendly $80 it comes down to, it's too much. The whole "You don't want it, don't buy it" argument does not work here, as many want it, but cannot afford it-that's a big difference.

Applies to the other recent mega priced boxes, too (Neil Young & to some degree Beatles).

While I will be in for the deluxe edition...2 things that bother me here are:
1: Why not include the vinyl EP tracks on the Blur-ray disc with the other audio tracks? or on a CD for that matter. and 2. Why is the bonus DVD material not on a Blu-Ray disc as well. If one owns a Blu-ray player (as I do), it is only natural to want the concert DVD on Blu-ray as well.
This box seems to be a "something for everyone but everything for nobody" type deal.
