Ha! I used to have a HUGE paranoia about that.

I used to get steamed rice for lunch because I was WAY poor and that was the cheapest thing in the food court. Sometimes A piece of rice woult be burnt just on the tip and it would look like a maggot head. I would throw the whole thing out knowing that it wasn't really a maggot.

The other day, I was eating lunch in the break room with some coworkers. One of the guys was eating broccoli, and we were all pretty nauseated by the smell of it, and harassing him about it, but he loved it, and kept on chowing down.

Until he saw the grub.

It was dead, of course, nuked in the microwave. But that didn't stop the guy from racing to the bathroom to puke his guts up.

The moral of this story, kids? Never. Eat. Broccoli.

Reminds me of the time a group of us were eating lunch at a nice upscale Italian restaurant a few years back. My friend was eating a really nice looking Antipasto salad, and down on the edge of the plate, there was a nice big green worm, crawling form underneath the lettuce.
He about lost it right there.
The women at the table all freaked out when they saw it.
The waitress comes over and sees it, then says "I'll check and see if you have to pay for that."
(meaning his meal)
I chimed in and said "I think the worm was ala carte".
After everybody stopped laughing, my friend said he damn sure better NOT have to pay for the meal, otherwise he was "going to take the plate around to all the other customers, and let them have a look!"

We all ate for free that day!

My dad used to say the same thing, only it was $250 a month. This was in 1951.

And yes, my dad knows how to gross us out STILL.

How 'bout finding little weevils in your uncooked rice? That's happened to me twice.

If you keep any rice, flour or other grains for significant periods of time, keep them in sealed plastic containers. Weevils don't do well without oxygen for some reason.
