This is one CD I will get. The Unforgettable Fire is my all time fav U2 CD and the worst sounding one by far. It sure needs a good re-master.
There were many B-sides and out-takes as well so the bonus tracks will be many (One would hope)

The Unforgettable Fire will be remastered and reissued in a “super deluxe” box set this October that will include “B-sides, rare and previously unreleased songs, and film and video footage.”
Oddly, news of the release — the sixth in the band’s ongoing catalog reissue campaign — came not via press release or posting on U2’s official Web site. Rather, fans attending the opening concerts of the band’s 360° World Tour in Barcelona this week picked up plastic shopping bags at the merchandise tables that advertised the forthcoming reissue, according to fan site U2tour.de.
Pictured at left, the text on the bag reads: “Coming October 2009: The Unforgettable Fire, 25th anniversary edition.” It lists the album being available in “super deluxe, deluxe, CD, vinyl and download” formats, and shows images of the Unforgettable Fire reissue, as well as the five past releases: Boy, October, War, Under a Blood Red Sky and The Joshua Tree.
It’s worth noting that The Unforgettable Fire is pictured as a larger box set, like the expanded Joshua Tree set that launched the band’s reissue series in 2007 (and featured a full bonus concert from Paris on DVD), rather than the CD-sized sets of the band’s first four titles that were released last year.
Perhaps in recognition of the anniversary of the 1984 album — which marked the band’s first collaboration with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois — U2 dusted off the album’s long-neglected title track (see video below) and “MLK,” in addition to the obligatory “Pride (In the Name of Love),” at its two Barcelona concerts this week.

From FMQB.com:
On BBC Radio 1 yesterday, Bono and The Edge revealed that U2 had been digging out rare and unreleased tracks for the upcoming deluxe re-issue of 1984's The Unforgettable Fire. The NME reports that the band specifically discussed a track called "Disappearing Act," and later played a clip of it on the air.
The Edge said that he had recently "listened to some tracks that we're gonna release with the new Unforgettable Fire reissue, some new songs that we discovered that we'd recorded, back in that era - the '80s - that we're gonna put out. And they sound amazing."
Bono called "Disappearing Act" "incredibly special" and The Edge added that "it was originally called 'White City,' and it was a track we started with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois back in 1983 when we were recording The Unforgettable Fire. And we discovered it about six months ago, and we dug it out and did some work on it in France a few weeks ago, and it's now finished."
The pair also touched on the financially-troubled Spider-Man musical that they've written music for. The Edge said that it is not a traditional musical but "It touches on opera, it touches on rock & roll. There are some real character-driven songs as well, very unusual song types for us."
In other U2 news, the band has recorded astronauts on board the International Space Station singing "Your Blue Room" from the Passengers album, which the band expects to incorporate into their U2 360 Tour in the near future. Passengers was the collaborative alter ego used by U2 and Eno for the 1995 album Original Soundtracks 1.

What's the difference between these deluxe editions and the deluxe editions released last year in the box set I purchased that left extra space in the box to accomodate the not-included Under a Bloody Red Sky...?

I think it's a continuation of the series that began with The Joshua Tree. I don't expect this will fit in the box, but content-wise it sounds like a similar approach.

This is part of the ongoing series and it will be in 1CD, 2CD and 2CD/1DVD formats from what I understand just like The Joshua Tree was. The others were all 1 or 2 CDs except Under A Blood Red Sky which was 1CD, 1DVD or 1CD/1DVD. The Unforgettable Fire is my favorite U2 album and the remaster I've been looking forward to the most. I have all the remasters and they've been truly great, although the War remaster had way too many remixes on the bonus disc for any human to possibly endure. I hope that won't be the case here.

Do you know what's going to be on the DVD? Any chance it will be a concert?

You can put anything you want into the box. Under The Blood Red Sky, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree...it's your box, you make the call

I would love a DVD of that. I already have a boot of the show, but wouldn't mind having a video. Thanks IP!

I have never bought this album, so I will be getting this. I heard the CD out there now is pretty bad and if I've waited this long, I can go another two months.

The original CD sounds pretty bad but the Mofi sounds exceptional and will be hard to beat particularly if UF is brickwalled. Hopefully it isn't. I've stuck to my original CDs for the most part because I was very disappointed with most of the remasters in this series. They aren't necessarily bad but they didn't live up to my expectations.

Based on the other remasters, sonically I'd suggest keeping your Mofi, they've been horribly bright & loud.

I have bought literally hundreds of remastered CD reissues since the mid-90’s, and I can honestly say that the U2 remasters, along with maybe the Steely Dan remasters, are less loud than any recently remastered CD’s out there. In fact, I can’t really tell a big difference in sound quality and loudness between the original and the remaster, and I do have decent stereo equipment. This is especially the case with The Joshua Tree. I played the original and the remaster back to back tonight, and I didn’t even have to move the volume knob on my amp.
I do not claim to be a recording engineer, but I am as irritated by loud CD's as anyone else. As an experiment, I made 192 kbps mp3’s of the original and remastered versions of the song Bullet The Blue Sky and put them into MP3Gain to see the volume difference. The unremastered volume came out to 90.5dB, and the remastered volume came out to 93.5dB. Bullet is one of the loudest cuts on that CD. I don't have software that measures the volume of WAV files, but I would be willing to bet you would still get similiar results.
93.5dB is not that loud for a remastered song these days. In fact, it's not that loud for any remaster that has come out since remastering technology became available. For instance, the late 90's remastered version of “Out Of Control” from The Eagles measured out at 97.1dB. The recently remastered version of “Shake It Up” from the Cars came out to 96.5dB. The Steely Dan remasters are almost universally praised, and “Kid Charlemagne” measured out at 94.6dB. Even though the Fleetwood Mac CD “Say You Will” from a couple years back has never been reissued and remastered, the song “What’s The World Coming To” measured out at 99.2dB. The Mac and Eagles remastered tunes are prime examples of songs that are way too loud - MP3Gain screamed "clipping" on both of them.
The U2 remasters maybe the least volume boosted remasters from any major recording artist since the loudness wars picked up major steam in the late 90’s. I mean, I have original CD's from other artists that came out in the 80's that are less loud than these U2 remasters.

I have zero problems with the U2 remasters. When I hear something jump out at me like some of the new Stones remasters (although only the first batch from 1971-76) I notice it and I can still deal with it. But I just don't hear anything wrong with the U2 remasters in the least. I didn't have to turn them down, I heard no distortion, I just didn't hear anything wrong with them (especially Boy and The Joshua Tree), and I love the presentation physically as well. I think they're first class all the way. We just all don't hear things the same and that will never change, but to me at least I think they're especially nice to listen to.

I think one has to be careful not to confuse "sound quality" with "loudness." The former is more subjective, while the latter actually has some objective criteria that can be used. You can scientifically measure how loud a song is compared to other songs, and when you do so enough times, you can get an idea of what is truly loud or not. But sound quality is a different beast. A remastered CD can be fine in the loudness department, but the engineer is still capable of doing a lousy remastering job.
I'll check out the loudness of the October remaster compared to the original sometime this evening. That's my least favorite U2 album, so I don't listen to it quite as much, even though I love some of the cuts. Under A Blood Red Sky seems about the same for me. As far as more subjective qualities like brightness are concerned, I will admit that my Cambridge amp is a mid rangy amp that de-emphasizes the high end. I am not subjected to as much pain as people with other systems.

Stand corrected......sort of. You are most definitely right about October I HATE MP3'S:
Glorida 97.4dB I Fall Down 95.9dB I Threw A Brick Through A Window 94.6dB Rejoice 97.3dB Fire 97.1dB Tomorrow 97.0dB October 91.4dB With A Shout (Jerusalem) 97.5dB Stranger In A Strange Land 95.9dB Scarlet 92.9dB Is That All 96.7dB
However, they are apparently not doing this to all of the U2 remasters. Here's The Joshua Tree by comparison. I have the box set:
Where The Streets Have No Name 94.0dB I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For 93.6dB With Or Without You 93.1dB Bullet The Blue Sky 93.5dB Running To Stand Still 89.4dB Red Hill Mining Town 94.3dB In God's Country 94.6dB Trip Through Your Wires 95.6dB One Tree Hill 95.6dB Exit 94.6dB Mothers Of The Disappeared 90.6dB
So who the heck knows what one will get when they buy the Unforgettable Fire box set.......it could be pleasure or pain.
