Universal/Mercury keep up their proud tradition of pillaging Rod's early albums to bring out releases to coincide with (and benefit from) activity from Warner or J.
This is a single disc set and marks the first time that a Universal release borrows from the Warner era.
Presumably, this is an offshoot of them licencing 12 tracks to Warner for the new boxset.

Product Description
The 1970s were very, very good for Rod Stewart. He had left the Jeff Beck Group, joined the Faces, recorded his most highly acclaimed solo albums ever for Mercury Records, and had the hits that launched his solo career into International pop megastardom. This is the period of time that this new compilation focuses on, and this is also the first single disc compilation that includes all of his biggest hits and most significant recordings of that fruitful decade; i.e.: the #1s "Maggie May," "Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)," and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy," plus such key recordings as "Reason To Believe," "You Wear It Well," and "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)." In other words, the first single disc to combine the biggest '70s Warner Brothers hits with the biggest and best of the Mercury years.

1. Maggie May
2. Handbags & Gladrags
3. Gasoline Alley
4. It's All Over Now
5. Country Comforts
6. Every Picture Tells A Story
7. Mandolin Wind
8. (I Know) I'm Losing You
9. Reason To Believe
10. You Wear It Well
11. I'd Rather Go Blind
12. Angel
13. Twistin' The Night Away
14. Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)
15. Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?
16. You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)

I'd sure rather have this than a live disc or BBC set from this era. Bravo Universal!

Bravo? Seriously, Universal have rehashed 1969-1974 so many times it's not even funny.
This is a cynical release timed solely to get some sales through product adjacency with Sessions coming out four weeks later.

I think Technophallus was being a little sarcastic there. :)
