I am so into getting these. I have bought all the Salvo remasters up to this point (so why stop now) :}

Actually these titles, especially "Grand Hotel" is my favorite during this era for the band.

I had just completed my run of PH Cds with all 3 of these titles plus Exotic Birds and Fruit and Ninth all on Repertoire (with the exception of Grand Hotel which is a Japanese mini-lp ). I think they all sound fantastic. I've always liked Repertoire's work. But I also have the Salvo issues of the first four and I think they are definitive. I'm in for these new Salvo reissues as well. Not sure what I'll do with the others yet (trade or keep?). Timing is everything in this buisness.

I hear ya-"Grand Hotel" is my favorite Procol album. I still have the old gatefold vinyl with the menu!
I can't wait to get these and the rest when they come out.

These are real tempting due to the bonus tracks and decent prices. Aw Hell might as well have another version.

Which are the best remasters (sound-wise and bonus tracks-wise) for a Procul Harum beginner?:

Westside or Repertoire or Salvo?

Also, a question about the Salvo(s)...are they digipacks and, if so, are they standard size?

Thanks

I really like the Salvo and they are probably less expensive now than the Repertoire. Both labels have included nice bonus tracks and good notes. The Salvo are more like the mini-LP sleeve configuration from Japan.

So the Salvo and the Repertoire are both good with regards to sound?

Yes. The Repertoire are five or six years old by now. The Salvo are brand new. I know that doesn't always factor into the overall sound quality (everyone looks for ... or listens for different things) but my experience has been very positive with them. If you're a Procol Harum beginner I think you'd be pleased with either label's work.

Also, both issues of the self-titled album have very different bonus tracks.

Yes, obviously, you're refering to the Salvo & the Westside releases.

Thanks all for your advice.

I am tempted to get the Salvo releases...for one thing they are cheaper here in the UK but, and it's a big but, I hate mini-LP sleeves...so I have to go and see them in a shop before ordering online...ie, if they are standard jewel case/digipack size and have a spine I will relent

Otherwise, I will go for Repertoire but they are getting rarer and more expensive

Repertoire continued to manufacture Move & Procol Harum CD's long after their license from Fly Records expired, and so Bucks Music(present-day owner of the Fly & Cube catalogues) had to take legal action against Repertoire.

According to the US Amazon listing, the Repertoire releases are indeed OOP. There are also BGO twofers for some of the Procol Harum catalog.

I'm surprised that people seem to only mention the previous Repertoire releases, when the Friday Music editions are by far the best sounding of them all. The Salvo equivalents are en route to me from Amazon UK, so it will be interesting to compare the two.

I can't comment on the two-fers, however I am a huge PH fan and have been since day one.

I have the WestSide box and the individual titles as well as the Japanese mini's from 2001.

So I didn't think I really needed to get the Salvo's - we're all cutting back these days, aren't we?

But I broke down and got the first four last week and I have to say they are the best sounding of the lot.

I immediately ordered the next 3 on the day they came out and was sad to see they're already out of stock!

I think that's a pretty good indication of what the Procol fans think of Salvo's work....

BTW any ICErs ever see PH at the 1969 Atlantic city Pop Festival?

They blew a storm down while doing the segue into the 2001 theme and the storm blew past before they finished - my recollection was that they got a 5 minute standing ovation for it....so I was very pleased to see that they included a version of that (although recorded a few weeks earlier) on the Salty Dog Salvo release as a bonus..

Truly a band for the ages!

That may - or may not - be the case but Friday Music didn't put out the first five albums and only started with Grand Hotel whereas Repertoire issued all of them....so Friday isn't in the race for the first five.

It's a shame the Salvos are in such horrible packaging...by that I mean the size of the covers...
