Love that song.
And the movie as well. As hokey as it is, it's a very powerful movie.

"By My Side" was written by a cast member of the original verslon of the play before the eventual composer, Stephen Schwartz, was even on board and they were using pop songs for the various musical numbers. When Schwartz wrote his own score for the show he decided to leave this one in. It's not Biblically or even particularly religiously based, as most of the rest of the show is, but it captures the moment beautifully.
