Entirely true, though. You could also change that to hobbies like Dungeons & Dragons. D&D fans go equally nuts when their hobby is mentioned, even in passing, in other media.

"Vin Diesel plays D&D! Vin Diesel plays D&D! We're legit! We're legit!"

The only "legitimizing" that actually matters comes through quality stories that people enjoy reading and that made good use of the unique traits of the medium. All that other junk, getting mentioned in the paper, whatever?

Eh. :shrug:
