Ultimate Sin was a good album, and some pretty tasty guitar-y bits. But Zakk is awesome...

Even though they were stoned outta their gourds when they recorded it, Megadeth did a fine cover of Paranoid. I like Dave Mustaine better than all of the above ... but I digress.

Ozzy really has been lucky - he's been surrounded by talent for so long.

Tony Iommi - the master of the heavy riff
Randy Rhoads - so much potential never realized
Jake E. Lee - solid rhythms and tasty soloing (A Fine Pink Mist is an amazing CD)
Zakk Wylde - not my cup of tea (way too many harmonics) but a solid guitarist.

Who's to say which artist is "best?" Certainly not me......

Randy Rhodes!
The first two Ozzy albums are pure gold.
Zakk Wylde is damn good as well but the guy I didn't like was Brad Gillis.
Gary Moore was asked to join once upon a time and I always wondered what that would have sounded like.

Randy Rhodes. They all followed in his shadow. They were all great guitarists but they were never "In" Ozzy's band like Randy.

No love for Brad Gillis, Frank? Certainly not the best Ozzy guitarist but he did have the unenviable task of walking in Randy's shadow, having to complete the tour after Randy's death. Nobody could live up to that comparison.

As a critic, I'd have to say Randy. He was definitely an impressive talent, both artistically and technically.

As a fan though, the Zakk sound blows me away.

Randy all the way!

Next in line was Jake...

I would put Zakk at the bottom of the list... Tastless pinch harmonics and misguided mixing of Country music and metal just leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Jake E. Lee always gets a raw deal - he seems to have been largely forgotten these days. He's a great talent, and deserves more credit than he gets.

Having said that, I have to vote for Randy. The guy was brilliant, and such a huge influence on the whole generation of metal guitarists who followed.

Zakk Wylde does not suck. Might not be your style but c'mon. I'm tired of the pinch harmonics and squeals and trills and things like that, but he's still a quality player. Ozzy's best guitarist without question was Randy Rhoads (Tony Iommi was not and will never be Ozzy's guitarist-Iommi made Ozzy who he is). Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore are my 2 favorite players ever.
I assume you meant Joe Holmes as to who you never heard of-he was Ozzy's main guitarist from 1995-2001 although there was also a lot of Sabbath activity. He only played live though-no studio material although he did write some songs on Down To Earth.
Brad Gillis and even Bernie Torme should be on this list as well, and Gillis gets very high votes from me-the master of the tremolo bar!
To conclude Geff:
You have your wish. Wylde is being replaced as we speak for Ozzy's new album although some of Wylde's backing tracks might appear. Ozzy said he wants to try something new and I do welcome that. Buckethead is one of the names being floated around-he is a genius, but I think Ozzy needs someone more mentally stable!

I agree with you on Iommi. He wasn't "Ozzy's guitarist."

As for Bernie Torme, the fact of the matter is that he played as part of Ozzy's band for a couple of weeks or so after Randy Rhoads died. He never appeared on an official album and aside from maybe some die-hards who've heard a bootleg (or actually got to see one of the live shows) from his tenure, most people have never heard him with Ozzy. Which is why I think he gets overlooked. Even Gillis managed to play on the Sabbath covers live album Speak Of The Devil.

I know all that about Torme-he's such a good player he never gets mentioned anywhere so I wanted to give him props. Plus, Torme and Holmes both only played live and appear on no albums (although one track with Holmes is on the Ozzy boxset), so Torme should be mentioned that's all.
Hell, Alex Skolnick of Testament had the gig in '95 and played a show in the UK, but Ozzy changed his mind and went with Holmes.
His years in Gillan were quite good. I've heard a boot from New Hampshire from '82 with him but the quality isn't so hot. He brought a different style, that's for sure. He cracked under the pressure and begged off the tour after just a few weeks.
Update:
Ozzy has stated that he's working with John 5-no confirmation he's got the gig yet, but he'd be quite a good choice. The man can solo his ass off and play with tatse, as well as add some different styles and sounds that are more for color and not as flashy.

John 5 might be the closest Ozzy's come to having a replacement for Randy Rhoads. Not the same style, but incredibly talented, great musical vision and monster player. Plus with his varied background, he can do what Rhoads did and push Ozzy in different directions. That is, IF Ozzy (and especially Sharon) are willing to let Ozzy be pushed. I think it would be a great move for Ozzy - not sure so much for John 5, only because I don't know what Ozzy has left in the tank any more.

Ozzy needs a guitarist who can also write songs; which is partially why Lee, Rhodes & Iommi are so missed.
Last Ozzy album I care about was 1986's Ultimate Sin & of course 1987's vault release Tribute.

I'd agree that a writing guitarist like Rhoads or Lee would be great and John 5 could be that guy. But damn, I agree with Ozzy, The Ultimate Sin is a steaming pile of crap. I liked most of No Rest For The Wicked-some songs flat out stink but others are genius like "Fire In The Sky". No More Tears is one of Ozzy's most beloved albums and it's good but not great. Ozzmosis had excellent stuff and some so-so material but overall is strong especially "Tomorrow" and "Thunder Underground".

As for Ozzy guitarists let's not forget to mention Steve Vai (will that album they did in 1994 ever come out?). Only one song from the Vai sessions made it to Ozzmosis. And Jerry Cantrell played on the hideous Undercover album but did nice guitar work.
