US rockers FOREIGNER are set to release a new 3-CD set of new music, remixed hits and live performances.

Entitled Can't Slow Down, the album will be available on September 29th via Rhino Entertainment.

The album features 13 new songs produced by Marti Frederiksen and Mark Ronson, the title track a nod to NASCAR and the band's appearance at this year's Samsung 500 in Texas.

The second disc remixes Foreigner classics such as 'Double Vision', 'Cold As Ice', 'Urgent', 'Hot Blooded' and 'I Wanna Know What Love Is'.

The third disc in the set is a DVD which culls performances of hits in 5.1 surround sound, plus footage from Foreigner's current European tour.

The collection will be sold exclusively at Walmart for $12. The band launches its US tour July 30th in Morristown, N.J.

Hey, it worked for Journey. Why not?

I'm in-they sound amazing now. This is almost 100% the Journey formula which worked like a charm and produced a great album and tour. Not sure exactly what the remixed CD means but I'm banking that it's actually re-recordings a la Journey. That re-recordings disc of Journey is very good but totally pointless except for showing off Pineda's vocals and I'd imagine they could do the same here with Kelly Hansen's vocals because he is so good, but I'd wish they didn't.
The DVD will give people a chance to see how kick-ass they are live (the new Soundstage DVD is awesome I wonder if that's what it is).
Of course there will be those who boycott due to no Lou Gramm, but you can buy Lou's awful new CD of Christian Rock and have a blast.

How successful was the JouneyWalMart venture? Did it chart? Good critical reviews?

I see where two people now say that the formula "worked for Journey" and "worked like a charm for Journey", but I haven't heard any of the new stuff or re-recordings from that release. I guess there wasn't any radio play.

You don't think selling 1.2 million copies earning Platinum and making the Top 10 "worked"? That's what the Journey album did. They also had a Top 10 Adult Contemporary hit with "After All These Years", so that's not too shabby. A few songs got limited AOR airplay but Rock radio is such a joke now that unless you're Nickelback or Hinder a veteran band is unlikely to get any airplay.
Plus, Journey had a mostly sold-out tour with Heart and Cheap Trick to help out. Even if you hate Journey or hate the idea of no Steve Perry in Journey, Journey totally surprised people with how successful 2008 was for them. How many classic bands go Platinum lately? Bruce? No. Prince? No. U2? Nope.

Relax, Invisible Pedestrian. I was asking how successful the JourneyWalMart venture was.

I did not know it sold 1.2 million copies.
I did not know it made the top 10.
1 did not know they had a top 10 AC hit from the release.

I just asked how successful it was.

You answered, and then some.

You sarcastically put quotes around one of the things I said so I let you know it was a success. You can't possibly tell me you weren't being sarcastic. I'm quite relaxed don't worry.

I love the new Foreigner. My indie turn me on to to them and I wasn't expecting much at all but I was blown away. The new singer is a perfect fit! I will buy the new release on issue week for sure.

I'm glad you've calmed down, but I did not "sarcastically" put quotes around one of the things you said, rather I put quotes around things that you and another poster typed without quoting both full posts. I noticed that JGordonBD didn't take offense at my post, and if he did, my apologies.

Not much was written here about the Journey venture with Wal-Mart after it's release. I feel that I asked a few honest questions. Thanks for answering them.

In this post I did put quotes around the word sarcastically even though I already quoted your last response. It is not intended as a form of sarcasm, but to highlight your choice of the word. You have no basis to say I was being sarcastic in my original post.

I am also curious how the Prince/Target venture has worked out, but I don't want to step on your toes by asking out loud on a music forum.

The second line of that last sentence is sarcastic, please let me know if I should have used quotation marks while you are still "quite relaxed".

It's still not really Foreigner. It's Mick Jones with his Foreigner tribute band.

I don't see anything sarcastic about that use of direct quotes. He was merely curious about the information that backed up those statements. That's certainly the way I interpreted it. Perhaps someone was being — "sensitive" — about not having his statement accepted as common knowledge. That said, the response was quite informative, despite its opening tone and the presumption of sarcasm. Thank you for the question, Steve.

Agreed. Have no interest in the new tunes and I already have the classic songs in their original form, so I will be passing on this one.

No, I'm not offended by anything written here, Steve. My point is that Foreigner is following the exact same model as Journey and are obviously looking for the same results.

1.) Same format: 3 discs, consisting of a brand new album, a re-recording of the hits by the current band, and a DVD of some of the hits by the current line-up in concert.
2.) Wal-Mart exclusivity - I'm not sure how this helps Foreigner, but Wal-Mart is clearly looking for lightning to strike twice with this deal.
3.) This is a chance to introduce a new lead singer & new material in the most "comfortable" manner possible (using the hits) at a bargain price for customers.

I remember several press reports about the Journey release. The main angle was that the lead singer was found via YouTube. There was a lot of coverage on this point, because YouTube is "cool". Then, I recall the story about the album landing in Billboard's top 5 for the week it was released. It's very difficult to move a lot of units for new music from a "dinosaur rock" act, so this was definitely a triumph. Naturally, the "let's do it again" (Wal-Mart) and "me too" (other acts)mentality will combine to yield similar attempts. I'm just surprised that this Foreigner one appears to be exactly the same!

Jim

I can't believe I "misused" quotes. But damnit, that won't happen :again: because I've switched to colons because they're much :cooler: than boring quote marks.
I can't always understand someone's :tone: when they are typing as you see, we're not using :real: voices here. Apologies all around to any offended by my misunderstanding of :quotes: but it seemed :sarcastic: to me as quite a few people on here are sarcastic and crap on various :threads: that serves no purpose and I never say anything. I shall be stifled no more!
In all seriousness, if you were merely asking Steve, I was merely responding. Also my opening question was only that not a defensive, angry response as someone mentioned the :tone: of the statement which was not at all what I meant, thus I was misinterpreted as well.
It's not always easy to convey tone by typing, so there you go. Now I'm going to do the dishes without quotes.

IP,

Nice post, but I highly recommend that you keep quote marks away from your colon. Save yourself some pain and embarassment.

E-mail and posting in general is a dangerous form of communication as the intent is often lost. Not to get to AP about it, but the use of quotes was approriate (even without attribution) as it was taken out of direct context.
I am guilty of getting my nose bent out of shape as well, but seriously, we are here to discuss music, while important to all of us, a pretty inconsequential item in the big picture. I just keep thinking of Stripes:
"Settle down Francis"

Said with love and affection for all. Peace.

I'm from the old school where if bands from my era return with a new lead vocalist...I'm pretty much against it. I guess that could make me ignorant...but I like my bands with the vocalist I remember them with.

Mick Jones is just living off the name. I'm sure this group of musicians play and sing well, but it would have more integrity if they called it The Mick Jones Band or something else.

I recall Paul Stanley saying there could be a day when he or Gene Simmons would leave KISS and the band would continue...sorry to say that if either of them left, it would be officially over. Not that it's much better without Peter or Ace, but we're used to the idea of those 2 being long gone numerous times in the band's history that having Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer aboard is no big deal anymore.

As long as there's a nickel to be made, Gene and Paul will keep the KISS name out there.
