Album covers: photograph or illustration? Unless they are exceptional artists, like Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, and David Stone Martin, I usually prefer photographs. Just think of all the Blue Note covers.

I prefer good photographs to bad illustrations. I prefer good illustrations to bad photographs. I prefer good art direction to bad art direction. I prefer almost anything to the artists' own artwork, with the exception of a couple of Joni Mitchell covers. That woman can paint.

Cal Shankel's atrwork that covered many Zappa lps for a long time.
Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Their Santanic Majesties Requests, Some Girls, the Homer & Jethro lp covers, Johnny Cash's Everybody Love A Nut lp cover. Neon Park's - Weasels Ripped My Flesh and all his Little Feat covers...No Secrets, Waitress In A Dounut Shop
It is an art that since the lp - has lost some of it's luster.

I've got a poster of "Weasels Ripped my Flesh". That one deserves to go on the wall!
