In his 1987 book Cvltvre Made Stvpid, Tom Weller proposed a revision of the Dewey Decimal System to "better reflect the nature of modern publishing":

000-299 cookbooks
300-499 diet books
500-599 computer books
600-699 how-to books
700-799 humor books
800-899 pop-up books
900-999 other

I'd forgotten how awesome this book is. Here's another bit that still makes me giggle: A traditional Sue Indian prayer...

O sacred sky-bunny
Hayhuh hunnhuh
Bite the noses of my enemies
Hayhuh hunnhuh
As you did in the ancient-time
Before people had knees
And had to walk funny
Clump-clump, clump-clump
Pierce their eyeballs, o sky-bunny
Crush their skulls
Oh boy, oh boy
As you did in the ancient-time
When you devoured the hero-gerbil
When you made the sun and moon
From his shoelaces
Hunnhuh hunnhuh
I forget the rest

I didn't pay attention in elementary school and didn't understand the Dewey Decimal System until I was in my 40's.

I used to own that book, but I loaned it out and it never came back. I think I may still have Science Made Stupid around here somewhere.

Both books are funny on every single page. Weller even slips jokes onto the copyright pages.

And it's the only example of non-Western literature in the whole book.

I tried to embed a YouTube video, but it didn't work.

Anyway, the video is about librarians doing a parody of Lady Gaga's "Pokerface."

Here's the link:

Embedding should work now. — Linda

We NEVER get any superheroes who want to endorse our library. :(

I think there's this one guy in Seattle who may need the gig. He's probably going to be relocating pretty soon...... ;)
