just got a tweet from Pause & Play.
Link went to P Trees MySpace where
the new blog was....

The new album - "The Incident"
Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD.

The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.”

The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December - Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover feature on a separate EP length disc to stress their independence from the song cycle.

Video footage of the band in the studio working on The Incident, as well as audio previews, will be available online soon. The band will tour extensively to promote the album from mid September onwards.

Product Description
2009 two CD release from the Grammy-nominated modern Progressive Rock band. Porcupine Tree is fronted by Steven Wilson, who also is well-known for his work producing other artists, from Swedish Progressive Metal group Opeth, to Norwegian chanteuse Anja Garbarek. One of the only constants in Porcupine Tree's music is how it continues to evolve and confront the expectations of the band's fans from album to album. The Incident is their 10th studio album and takes the listener on a thrilling audio journey. In turns haunting, desolate, hypnotic and euphoric, its centre-piece is the title track: a stunning 55-minute musical statement that breaks down into 14 separate and often diverse (though interlinked) vignettes.

Great news!

Steven Wilson is a genius

He must spend a hell of a lot of time in the studio

His 5.1 mixes are the best there is. He is a genius behind the mixing desk.

Got my copy today from Amazon.

Tried it one time using my Denon's 5 Channel mode and it is a tasty treat. Another winner from Steve Wilson.

I believe the deluxe edition that had a DTS mix is sold-out at Burning Shed.

A DVDA release may happen in the future.

It's weird with this band-I think they're great and I have a number of their albums but I rarely listen to them because they're so impenetrable at times to listen to. So, I'm skipping this one and the Philly show next week (though I'm only missing the concert because of lack of $$$), but they still get my respect.

Rob sent me an email detailing his time at PT's LA show this past weekend:

Hey John,

I saw PT's LA show last night at Club Nokia and they were excellent!

The opening band, Big Elf, took the stage at exactly 8PM and played about a 50-minute set. This band made heavy use of organs and mellotrons. I never heard them before, so IMO, they sounded to me like a combination of the Deep Purple MK 1 line-up (think "Hush"), Uriah Heep and Quartermass. Overall, not bad, and the crowd loved them. They were the opening band for PT's West Coast shows only. Kings X is the opening band for the New York show, so let me know how they were if you see the show this Thursday.

After Big Elf finished their set, their roadies cleared off their equipment and PT's roadies took over. PT's stage setup is pretty much the same since I first saw them in November 2002:

- Projector screen in the background, center rear
- Keyboardist Richard Barbieri rear left
- Drummer Gavin Harrison rear right
- Guitarist John Wesley front left
- Leader extraordinaire Steve Wilson front center
- Bassist Colin Edward front right (does he ever take off that beret?)

PT took the stage at 9:20PM. Here's their set list.

- For the first half of their show, they performed Disc 1 of "The Incident" in its entirety

They were tight and crisp. The sound quality was astounding - clean, clear without being excessively loud. If you see them, you'll see that Steve likes to perform barefoot. Check out the photos of their Seattle show at the Moore Theatre on their website. There's a photo of Steve, barefoot, sitting on a chair playing a very cool-looking acoustic guitar which he used last night; that's him playing "Time Flies" because that was the only time he sits in that chair..

The first half of the show ended at 10:22PM and there was a 10-minute intermission. The house lights came back on and a "10:00:00" digital counter ("mm:ss:hs") was projected on the screen that counted backwards. When it got to "00:10:00" we all screamed out in unison: TEN, NINE,...,TWO, ONE!.. When the counter reached "00:00:00", the house lights faded out on queue, the crowd went wild and PT took the stage again for the second half of the show. Here's the set list:

1. The Start of Something Beautiful
2. The Sound of Muzak
3. <A song that I, as well as everyone in the crowd, was not familiar with -- an outtake from The Incident perhaps? If you see the show and know what the song is, please let me know.>
4. Anesthetize (middle section only, not the entire song -- play from 4:55 to 12:10 on the FoaBP CD to get an idea)
5. Lazarus
6. Strip the Soul
7. Bonnie the Cat

Encore #1: Way Out of Here

Encore #2: Trains

The house lights came back on at 11:40PM. My only complaint about the show was they didn't play any material prior to "In Absentia". Maybe they'll shake up the set-list and play some of the older material at the NY show.

All-in-all, another great, solid performance by PT! Can't wait for them to finish the tour, get back in the studios to record their next masterpiece and come back to perform.

Cheers,

Rob

btw....the song Rob missed #3 is "Buying New Soul" from Recordings.

I am really loving this! It's definitely a grower.

On a side note, I'll be seeing them live this Thursday in NYC. Anyone else going?

Here's last nights setlist from the PT show at Terminal5 in NYC:

Setlist

The Incident
--
Start of Something Beautiful
Russia On Ice
Anesthetize pt 2
Remember Me Lover
Strip the Soul/.3
Mother and Child
--
Sound of Muzak
Trains

"Trains" has become a tradition especially in NY.

I have the new album on the big rig right now. Listening to it using the Dolby Pro Logic II mode. Sounds great turned up loud with my 2 subs pumping! :D

There isn't a better song this year than "Octane Twisted". Just awsome!

Put my order in tonight!

Add the fact that Porcupine Tree will play Radio City this year and it's finally PT time.

Is that DVD-A also in the big LIMITED EDITION box set that already came out???

I bought the regular CD version plus the big boxset when they first came out but never opened the big box. The sticker on the outside says "DVD with 5.1 surround sound mix + high resolution stereo" but for all I know that is a regular DVD with DTS or something, not DVD-A. They already did something like this with Deadwing if I remember right (different DTS vs. DVD-A releases).

I can't answer on the Limited Box because I missed out on it.As for the Deadwing release, I had to get a Japanese pressing to get the DVD-A combined with the CD or go for seperate domestic releases. I do know that Fear Of A Blank Planet was first released as a Limited Edition CD+DVD with the DVD having a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital of the audio on the CD.Several months later PTree released the DVD-A as a stand alone release.

The limited box had a DTS 5.1 mix in there but no DVDA so if you care about Advanced Resolution sound, you'll need this.

The DTS track is pretty good but I'll need to the DVDA too since I have the capability. Plus I like to support the Tree. :)

Rob in LA was commenting to me last week that its strange PT will soon play Radio City when just a few years ago you could practically sit onstage as they played places like The Bottom Line or Irving Plaza. Radio City is a good and bad thing for long time fans.
I'm glad they have made it but sad we will lose that personal touch.

Yeah I totally agree.

I'm glad I got to see them in the earlier days in small clubs and am very happy that they are having success and moving up to larger venues to reflect their popularity, but as you say we do lose that small club vibe.

I expect some day we'll reflect on how great it was to see them in 3000 seat theaters as opposed to the stadiums they only play in then.
