http://www.nme.com/news/placebo/43474 Placebo announce new album details
Mar 16, 2009
Placebo have announced details of their 'optimistic' new album, due for release this summer.
'Battle For The Sun', the band’s sixth, is released on June 8.
The follow-up to 2006's 'Meds' was recorded in Toronto by Dave Bottrill (Tool) and mixed by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine / Nine Inch Nails), and heralds a new era for the veteran rockers.
Steve Hewitt, drummer since 1996, has been replaced by 22-year-old Californian Steve Forrest. And following the expiration of their deal with Virgin Records, Placebo chose to self-fund and license the new record themselves, with an initial European release through PIAS.
Frontman Brian Molko said of their new situation: "We've made a record about choosing life, and choosing to live, about stepping out of the darkness and into the light. Not necessarily turning your back on the darkness because it's there, it's essential; it's a part of who you are, but more about the choice of standing in the sunlight instead."
He continued: "I'm very optimistic about the future. I’m in a positive frame of mind and a good headspace. It's very exciting. There’s a lot of life in the old dog just yet."
Product Description 2009 release, the sixth studio album from the British Alt-Rock trio. With a 13 year history that takes in five studio albums, 10 million album sales, breakdowns, clean ups and the dizzy swell of global success, Placebo return with their first album since the release of Meds in 2006. Battle For The Sun was recorded over three months by producer Dave Bottrill (chosen by the band largely because of his work with Tool) in his Toronto studio and mixed in London by Alan Moulder. Battle For The Sun is a startling, alive, vital and boundary-vaulting record that marks a whole new era for a band that were in need of a change. 1. Kitty Litter 2. Ashtray Heart 3. Yes! Can't wait. These guys are so frickin' amazing. Anyone who digs Bowie, Echo & Bunnymen, Magazine, etc. should love them. This album might be the one that gets them significant success here in the States. They've already got the live following and are selling out 1,000 seat venues here, and they're massive around the world. Their cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" a few years back got them some airplay-great cover.

This will definitely be Placebo's biggest seller so far in the US. I went out to lunch with a friend today and we went to Best Buy and got the last 2 copies. The $7.99 price helps-why don't labels realize this??? These guys are enormous in the UK and elsewhere, but it's great to see them finally doing well here which started with 2006's "Meds". So far, it's great especially the single "For What It's Worth" (no, it's not THAT song).

Yeah, I agree IP., saw them live and they are a very good band. Will get this (especially at this steal price) and that excellent collection noted in an earlier post.

Glad to see a consistent tracklist between US and UK releases, although I suspect we'll still see some of kind special edition at some point...

Oh man, does this album kick ass! The title track gave me chills-fantastic stuff. Great band. I've seen them live once, and I'll see them again if I can get tickets. Last time they played Philly it sold out and I missed it.
