...here ain't nobody buys 'em and I said "But I will."

(I was just thinking about this song the other day. I always assumed that those lines referred to Sun Records, which was actually out of Memphis. I'm sure John Sebastian knew this so I can only assume it was artistic license.)

I've always wondered about the same thing.

From the liner notes of the 2002 "Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful" reissue:

Quote:
An incorrect reference to "a yellow Sun record from Nashville" as opposed to Memphis has befuddled listeners for decades. John: "It's a mistake. Zally pointed it out to me but guess what? It works better as Nashville!"

Since this is a "Nashville Cats" thread, I like this Sebastian quote better, from the liner notes that accompanied the 1990 Rhino compilation "Anthology":

Quote:
"A lot of our songs, although I composed them, came out of conversations among the band members. One of the running conversations was, 'What if anybody discovers that these guys down in Memphis and Nashville play like four times better than any of us rock 'n' rollers? How come nobody's noticed this? Is it just because they're 30 instead of 20?' That conversation just came out in this song. I had 45 minutes experience on a Fender pedal steel when we cut that. The trick is, Zally [Yanovsky] got a sound on his guitar kind of like a pedal steel. He played a bunch of hot licks, and all I did was add the slides you do with your feet at the end. We would cheat any way we could, but we did play the instruments ourselves."

In those days country players had terrrific chops but their sound was always very clean and thin, no overtones or distortion, which is what resonated with rock fans. Most listeners aren't as impressed by technical proficiency as the overall feel of a song.
