What are your thoughts on mashups? Love em? Hate em? Oblivious to em? Don't have an opinion one way or another?

I love mashups. For every successful mashup there are probably 50 crappy ones, but those good ones take existing parts and create something new and cool and fresh.
And that 50 to 1 ratio probably holds true for "normal" songs too.

Voted for "love 'em", but because of the 1 in 50 you alluded to. Some are technical marvels and you wonder how they ever thought to put those two songs together, but there's a lot of junk along the way.

If I wasn't at work right now I'd totally be posting "Thundersexy" by DJ ToTom and 'Stairway to Bootleg Heaven' by DJ Earworm right now. Look them up, they're both brilliant.
I love mashups - yeah, the wheat/chaff ratio's pretty steep, but I can't think of too many musical subgenres which that isn't true of to some extent, and when they work, they can be amazing.

I voted "love 'em." When they work they help to hear songs in new ways. Almost aural deconstruction.

I swapped posts on this topic a couple of years ago with Hank, and he moved me from the NO camp to the MAYBE camp.
That said, I heard a Dinah Washington mashup on XM yesterday, and it was horrible. They matched her with some crazy disco beat and it was just awful.
