I talk to strangers or sing a couple of lines from a song. Sometimes I shout something stupid, like: "This is the night hunting time!". :ohyes: :shush:

When I'm alone at the bus stop I sing along to my iPod (quietly, even alone) and I read. I've taken the bus every day for 12 years, but not for much longer. I finally broke down and bought a car. I should be expanding my carbon footprint some time next week.

Listen to my iPod quietly and observe folks.

I've been commuting for 28 years via the LIRR and then the subway. I usually read the paper while waiting for the train, and usually wrap up the crossword puzzle on the subway platform (while casually keeping an eye on my surroundings).

During yesterday's Jimbo Lunch. I was engaged in conversation by a friendly businessman (from somewhere in the midwest, judging by his accent), who had a few hours between meetings and was heading down to the World Trade Center site. I'm always friendly and helpful towards tourists.

When I did bus (and smoke), I would light up a cigarette. The bus would suddenly appear. I would continue to do so today if I still took the bus (not actually smoke, but light one up).

I will also read a daily newspaper or a magazine if I have one on me.

I don't like to use an ipod, and a discman is rather cumbersome, plus there's the fear of losing the disc. When I have commuted with a discman, I've usually played the latest Mojo freebie CD, which I then could easily replace. When I go to London I take a discman with me, so I can test my CD purchases in the hotel. I buy second hand in London. I always go for OOP or early editions.

I sometimes read the paper while standing on the platform, but I like to save that for the journey.

I usually try to name all the members of 80's metal bands.

I used to talk to strangers and shout peculiar things years ago in my late twenties when waiting for public transport.Since I don't live in a big city anymore where you're unlikely to be embarrassed by seeing the same people again, and growing up too (at 42 you have to try) I've stopped.

One of my most mindless utterances was "Keep five alive for me !!"
I know,sad isn't it ?

I also used to like the idea of street theatre, where you can cause a minor commotion to break the tedium. They used to call it "a happening" in the 60s.A little minor chaos never did anyone harm.

btw. I'm not a psychologist but what we shout or sing may subconsciously reveal something about us too.

When I did commute (22 years ago) I had a Sony Walkman that helped pass time.

These days I wouldn't go anywhere without an IPOD. Best damn musical invention ever.
