There was even a version done in Australia (hostessed by Melissa, apparently):

I remember that show!

Mr. Do Bee scared the crap out of me, though.

The Japanese version had a controversial episode; when hostess Midori Utsumi (second hostess) asked the kids, Tell me a word that begin with "Ki" (き or キ). A boy answered with "kintama" (testicles). Miss Midori replied "Do you know any words that are more beautiful?" The same boy responded with "kireina kintama!" ("beautiful testicles"; the word "kireina" (beautiful) also begins with "Ki"). After a commercial break, the boy was replaced with a teddy bear. Midori Utsumi, who has since became a major media personality, often tells this story on some TV programs that she appears in.

Was it a Muslim teddy bear? If so, that's disrespectful.

Here's Miss Susan wielding the psychedelic Magic Mirror on a 1960s episode of Australia's Romper Room:

Whoa! Before my time! :). The ones I saw were all in colour. There was also Mr. Don't Bee, who was more interesting, existentially, than his do-gooder counterpart. ;)

The magic mirror was a weird concept.

There's a thread elsewhere here where we talked at length about Romper Room. It might have been a dedicated Romper Room thread, or it might have been one where we talked about childhood shows and got on a Romper Room tangent.

I say that because I have a vague memory that Hugh may have talked about that Canadian show with funny monster guys on it (live action).

I've said this before (in that other thread), but I was absolutely mesmerized by the mirror where she looked out at us and said our names. I didn't fully understand what TV was at that age, and I thought she was looking out at us.

I remember I told my dad I wanted to take a camera, open the back of the TV, and crawl inside it and take a picture of Casper the Ghost.

Here's the Tacoma, Washington version, circa the late '60s/early '70s, with Miss Margaret:

At least a couple of people got my Romper Room joke a couple of weeks ago, then!
I'm just not intellectual enough to be the deliberately obscure comic.

Miss Louise was The NY Hostess in the 60's-early 70's
For years it seems I'd sit in front of the TV and wait for her to look into her magic mirror and see my name.
She never did and I've never recovered.
Stupid Louise damn Doo-Bee argh!!!!!
