Robin- Batman's sidekick finally scored his own series in 1993 after three successful minis. The hero under the mask, Tim Drake, was fairly new to the role, but Bat-fans had really taken to the character. Chuck Dixon and Tom Grummett picked up where the minis left off and created a dynamic and successful series, featuring the young hero on his own, facing off against super-villains, crimelords, ninjas, and the more common pitfalls of adolescence. The character's popularity took off, leading to extensive appearances throughout the DCU, most notably in Young Justice and Teen Titans. Although the book recently finished a 15-year run, it seems that Tim Drake will still be a central figure in the DCU for a long time to come.

Green Arrow- After his successful relaunch of the character in the mini The Longbow Hunters, Mike Grell received the go-ahead to put Green Arrow in his first ongoing series. Grell had placed the character more firmly in the "real world" and played up his role as a hunter of men in the miniseries, and joined by Ed Hannigan and other artists for the series, he carried this even further. Setting aside the gimmicks of the past, Green Arrow dealt with drug smugglers, rapists, slavers, and serial killers. He also became a man who would kill if necessary, and this look at a hero's journey through a world much like our own remains a favorite of many readers today.
