I recently picked up these hardcover collections of Joe Kubert's Tarzan comics (originally printed by DC), and I think they may be among the best action comics that I have ever read. Kubert wrote as well as drew these comics and they are a clear example of why he is pretty much the best in the industry. I cannot recommend these volumes enough! The stories are great and fast moving (the adaptations of Burrough's tales in the early issues are especially good). Kubert's art is dark and moody with excellent use of shadow and panel layout. His thick painterly lines show a confidence in the form thaw few have possessed before or since. He also illustrated some of the best animal action ever. Oh yeah, on the few pages where Kubert got an art assist - the go-to guy was Burne Hogarth - not bad! Here are the collections as well as a sampling of the absolutely gorgeous Kubert covers:

I have some of the original issues. They're great!

As Lil' Jay would say, this is in my wheelhouse.

This was a huge moment in my childhood. I'd read Tarzan's origin repeatedly by different comic artists, but nothing matched Kubert's telling of Tarzan of the Apes and The Return of Tarzan. The archives stuck to Tatjana Woods original color palate and placement. Fantastic books.

The first 4 issues are a perfect template for a Tarzan movie. Just use them as storyboards, with today's special effects it could be amazing.

I may buy these. I've always been interested in them, because I like Kubert, I like Tarzan, I like all things pulp and Burroughs.

I think hearing that, on top of all that, they are actually great, enjoyable comic books puts me over the top.

I wish there was a single volume absolute.

Not only does Kubert's art suit the jungle action.... he was the perfect choice for the period. The men and women look like they stepped out of the turn of the century. Especially when you get to Paris and London.

How come no one's collected Rima the Jungle Girl—with nice covers by Kubert
and incredibly lush interiors/vegetation backdrops by penciler/inker Nestor Redondo?

Those seven issues are begging for a nice collected volume.

Blew my young mind to find out that Redondo was doing those pages strictly with a brush.

I shook Kubert's hand once. The man had a grip of steel!

There's a cool Kubert-drawn promotional poster out now, hanging in my LCS. It has Conan, Soloman Kane, and Kull on it.

I called dibs on it.

(My LCS gives promotional posters away to the first person that asks for it. Writes your name on the back of and calls you when he's ready to take it down.)

I've had volume 1 of the Dark Horse reprints since it first came out. Then my dad took it, and read it. I really need to get the other volumes.

I won an auction for a Kubert/Redondo Tarzan page last week, I will post a pic when it arrives.

Looking at these covers reminds me that The Tarzan logo was really well done, there's something I really like about it.

If you like this stuff, I highly recommend checking out Kubert's return to Tor, which should be hitting TPB form right about now - at 80+ Kubert still has it, it was my favorite mini-series from last year.

Sweet. I should look around for a Redondo piece, and see what's out there.
