Exclusive: The Goonies Talk Sequel
29 April 2009
Never say never. Or die.

You may not have realised, but March 17, 2009, was an historic day. It was on that day in Hollywood, California, that all of The Goonies, including director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg, were reunited for the first time in over 20 years* to have their photo taken for Empire's 20th birthday issue.

Naturally, whenever one or more Goonies are gathered together, they're always asked about a sequel, and this time was no different. Here's a little taste of what they had to say.

Richard Donner: "We tried for a long time. Steven and I had many meetings with writers but nothing stuck. It seemed disrespectful."

Corey Feldman: "So I guess the answer about the sequel is that there's always hope."

Donner: "No. No hope."

Sean Astin: "A year from now, ten years from now, 50 years from now, I'm absolutely convinced there'll be one. We'll figure it out. A sequel could be great. It could be shitty. You never know. But the original is the thing it is and no-one can ever change it."

That said, they do of course never say die. For the full interview, including talk of unconvincing sea-monsters, Josh Brolin's fashion mistakes and discussions of a Broadway remake of the movie, pick up the new issue of Empire.

I know most of you are too old to appreciate this. *cough James* but it's cool to me.

That one is still a major babe too!

The DVD has a cast commentary with some picture-in-picture. Oh MAN did she grow up to be hot. She looked awesome in that commentary.

Goonies kicked ass, by the way. I reviewed it. I agree with my review.

I think I like Stand By Me a little more, though.

Stand By Me is also awesome, but Goonies was actually a part of my childhood. I didn't see or hear about Stand By Me 'til I was a teen.

Stand by Me I hit way late

I still remember Goonies 2 the video game making everyone at school swear that it meant a sequel was coming.

Hated everything about the Goonies when it came out, despite being the right age.

Not then. :) I used to hate movies starring kids. Like hating Robin and Short Round, but liking Batman and Indiana Jones, you know?

It's fair to say that my default position on something should be easy for you to figure out. :)

Oh aye yeah - Those fucking sidekicks.. Made my heroes (captain america, batman) look like paedos

But The goonies was an exception - Maaaaan that red head was hot .. "ANDI.. YOU GOOOOONIE!!!"

Generally tho, I gets ya Jeff - I prefered older kids like breakfast club & pretty in pink. or ferris.

I think it would be relatively cool & easy to make a sequel.

Just make the original lot the PARENTS of the new adventurers. Easy.
