These are all coming out via Sony's Legacy imprint on June 30th, in honour of the 40th Anniversary of the albums' original releases:

Plus a limited edition 10-CD box set containing all of the above:

:o

The Santana remaster has already been released in two forms: As a single disc remaster with bonus tracks and as a legacy edition. Curious to see what this new version will have.

"Kozmic Blues" is an awesome album and I'd love to see it expanded. Unlike "Cheap Thrills" and "Pearl", there haven't been any alternate takes issued from the studio sessions and only one outtake--"Dear Landlord". There's got to be more in the vaults.

There have apparently been some bogus tracks advertised as "Kozmic Blues" outtakes sung by a Joplin sound-alike floating around in the bootleg world, although I need to track them down and listen to them for myself.

One of Janis's first concerts with the "Kozmic Blues" band has been streaming at Wolfgang's Vault ( http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/j ... -3173.html ). Recorded Feb12, 1969 at the Fillmore East, it contains two songs never officially released--"You're The Only One Who Really Knows" and "Walk Right In".

I have am original Canadian vinyl copy of this album--unlike the US version, it contains the title on the front sleeve.

Until Sony Music is willing to reveal the track listings, I can't possibly order these. Apparently, the Sha Na Na disc has been cancelled.

So, they can remaster "Santana" for the THIRD time and the crappy "Supernatural", but still nothing for albums like "Marathon", "Zebop!", "Shango", "Inner Secrets", etc. Frickin' lame. Frickin' lame man.

I'm curious what they're going to do for the Airplane? 1969 was both Volunteers & Bless It's.... I'd like to see the COMPLETE Quad version of Volunteers (due to the alternate versions) all on 1 cd; possibly with some new live tracks.

Yeah, I'm going to have to concur with the Santana assessment. That debut album is already available as a single disc, and double-disc remaster. Not to mention a gold disc by Mobile Fidelity and Sony Mastersound a long time ago.
When is Columbia going to remaster albums like Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live, Lotus, Borboletta, Illuminations, Amigos, Festival, Inner Secrets or the rest of the '78-'82 catelog? If you want to hear those remastered you have to buy the pricey Japanese mini LP CDs (and not all those titles are even available in that format).

Talk about milking the public.

Still no tracklistings, but some good news has trickled out: these are all now being referred to by Sony as 2-CD [lilred]Woodstock Edition[/lilred] expanded remasters, so hopefully they'll all be worth picking up!

Yeah, but the Santana deluxe edition already has the Woodstock concert on disc two, so unless they're supplying a DVD of Santana's performance, I can't see what the upgrade would be.

Only 2 selections from Santana's set were filmed in their entirety. As for "Evil Ways", as we know, due to the fact that the percussionists never made it onto tape during the recording of the song, the percussion was re-recorded(by original Santana member Michael Carabello) & the Timbales of Jose Chepito Areas were re-performed by his son Adrian Jose Areas. Now comes further news that Carlos Santana has re-recorded the guitar part as well(due to the original guitar being out of tune).

Funny, in Sony's 2-CD "Legacy Edition" of the first Santana album, all of the other Woodstock tracks were included, with the liner notes falsely claiming that "Evil Ways" wasn't performed at Woodstock".

Though "Rolling Stone" magazine(May 14th issue) reports an upcoming "Woodstock" 6-CD set, there are reports elsewhere on the internet that this project is now troubled by artist permission issues. Anyhow, between the various Woodstock CD compilations that have been released over the years(and some artists for whom almost complete sets have been issued, and whatever tracks you can extract from various Woodstock video releases), there's much much more than 6 CD's of music in circulation.

Janis' full Woodstock has been bootlegged for years--it remains as the only bootleg CD I've ever seen on sale at a Barnes & Noble. Of her ten song set, the only songs never officially released on CD have been "As Good As You've Been To This World", "Raise Your Hand", and "Can't Turn You Loose", although footage of "Can't Turn You Loose" appeared in the 1974 "Janis" documentary--lord knows why, as it mostly served as a showpiece for sax player Snookie Flowers.

Of the other seven songs, three of them ("Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Work Me Lord" and an edited version of "Ball And Chain") appeared on the 1994 Woodstock boxed set. The full version of "Ball And Chain" appeared on the "Woodstock Diary" disc. "Piece Of My Heart" and "Summertime" were on the expanded "Kozmic Blues", and "To Love Somebody" and "Kozmic Blues" (the song) were on the 2003 "Essential Janis Joplin" set.

While I suppose I'd appreciate the official relase of the remaining 30% of Janis' Woodstock set, I'm not all that enthused. Her performance was off that night, to say the least.

Bump with a slight update: still no tracklistings, but these editions are now being referred to by Sony Legacy by the series title [lilred]The Woodstock Experience[/lilred].

Weird...in Joplin's case, what seemed promising about three weeks ago is starting to sound suspiciously of being yet another best-of comp.

C'mon, this is just a record companies last gasp effort at soaking some cash out of boomers like me before we croak. Personally, I'm looking forward to an Altamont box set.

My prediction is that for the five Sony "Woodstock Edition" sets and Rhino's proposed 6-CD Woodstock boxes, we'll see long-term postponements if these sets are released at All. The Rhino set is already in doubt due to artist/label permission problems. Certainly, none of these CD releases will be on the market soon enough to capitalize on interest in Woodstock that will be generated by Warner Bros.' upcoming Woodstock 3-DVD set.

Apparantley there's serious attempts at a Woodstock 2009 going on from the original promoters. It appears it will not take place at the original site and Brooklyn/Central Park is the likely location. It may happen in September or next year-the promoters are disagreeing about which.
Artists who I've heard would be playing include The Who, Santana, Jeffrson Starship, John Fogerty, The Dead, Steve Winwood, Ten Years After, Iron Butterfly and others. An invitation for Led Zeppelin to perform is expected. Could be cool-might not happen this year due to the economy and lack of sponsors. It is expected to be a free show.
There is a celebration show occurring on the date in Woodstock but is not Woodstock. This is what I found about that.

A Woodstock Story

Jefferson Starship, Canned Heat, Mountain, Tom Constanten, Ten Years After, Levon Helm Band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Country Joe McDonald are slated to play at the Bethel Woods Music Festival with the Heroes of Woodstock tour on August 15th, 2009.

That above mentioned show for Prospect Park in Brooklyn or Central Park is in no way a reality. Joel Rosenman and Michael Lang can't even agree on a location for a story related photoshoot much less a roster of artists. Iron Butterfly? The Who? The Dead? Please.
