I mean, I get him, but I don't get him. I see what he's doing, I recognize the things that appeal to people, I see that he's very good at what he does and am often impressed with his technique.

But it's not for me. I recognize his thing but I don't get it. I don't get why it creates such devotion in his fans. The cult of personality surrounding him ... I don't get it.

Maybe it's a bit of knee-jerk backlash on my part. Could be. I really enjoyed a number of his films (PF, RD, TR). Stuff like Kill Bill was, you know, well made. But.

You know.

But.

Can't say I even enjoyed his films that much.

I liked Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. His work since hasn't been all that for me. He's a little to obsessed with 70s exploitation and gore.

PF is the only thing i saw i liked but i kinda like him . I like his enthusiasm. Even when he was on American Idol he still seemed like a big fan who wanted to help people and talk movie music.

I liked Pulp Fiction (a lot), Reservoir Dogs & Kill Bill, but didn't care for his Grindhouse movie all that much. I can't even remember the title. I realize it was a homage to '70s b-movies, but it was a little too reverent. Of course, I'm guessing, because I'm not familiar with that genre.

I'm curious about his new movie, though I'm not happy that Tarantino has hopped aboard the remake train.

Like Martin Scorsese, I'm sure Tarantino would be an AWESOME guy to spend lunch talking about movies with.

For the longest time Inglorious Bastards has been touted as his "man-on-a-mission masterpiece."

I saw the trailer. I am not impressed.

Hated his Grindhouse flick, but I love Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, and think that Jackie Brown is one of the most underrated films of the 90s.

People love Tarantino because he used to be a clerk in a video store. He represents every mastrubatory film buff who imagines they have a screenplay in them, that would kick ass in Hollywood....if only...

So, QT kicking Hollywood ass, makes him a hero to that subset of fans.

In my opinion.

I like my opinion, and it describes why I really do like QT. So there.

And of course, not too long after Tarantino came along, we got Kevin Smith, who further geekified film with numerous references to Star Wars, comic books and scatalogical humor.

I think that's what people who don't like Tarantino would like to believe.

I think the real key is that Tarantino is, like us, a product of the five billion awful & brilliant movies that we have seen, and he channels this stuff better than anybody in the business (even Taft talks about how well-made his movies are). I was just watching The League Of Gentlemen movie yesterday and they're making all manner of movie references during it, which is funny, but they're not really skilled movie makers. You see the same thing on Family Guy, The Simpsons, Buffy & Angel, Robot Chicken, Gilmore Girls, and on and on.

And Tarantino is the slickest, most polished, most accomplished, most cool version of the pop culture self-referencing phenomenon.

Except, Steven, I really, really like QTs movies. My description is part of the reason why I do like him. Film geek that I am...(check out the movie thread to see more of my descent into celluloid history).

I have seen enough films to know what he is 'ripping off' or 'homaging'. But I do, genuinely appreciate his craft. Hyper violent, as it is.

That might have been a part of why you like him, but I figure the skill of his craft far eclipses that. If he made shitty movies, then he'd just be Kevin Smith.

I think he needs to start making good movies again. Pulp Fiction was good.

The others? Too much homages to sucky movies. That just gets you a brand new sucky movie.
