Levon Helm announces June 30 release of "Electric Dirt"

By John W. Barry • April 13, 2009

Levon Helm of Woodstock will release his second solo album, "Electric Dirt," on June 30, he announced this morning.

Multi-instrumentalist and Levon Helm Band member Larry Campbell produced "Electric Dirt," which features "Growing Trade," co-written by Helm and Campbell; "Golden Bird" by longtime Woodstock resident and musician Happy Traum; "Tennessee Jed," co-written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter and a staple of the Grateful Dead's live repertoire for decades; "Kingfish" by Randy Newman; and "I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel To Be Free" by Nina Simone.

A native of Arkansas, Helm was drummer, mandolin player and vocalist for The Band. He has lived in Woodstock for decades.

"Kingfish" features horn arrangements by New Orleans composer Allen Toussaint, who has a long history with Helm and The Band, and the Levon Helm Band.

"Electric Dirt," which will be released by Dirt Farmer Music/Vanguard Records, was recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, commonly called, "The Barn," where Helm for the past several years has staged his "Midnight Ramble" house concerts.

Helm and his fellow musicians in The Band decades ago backed Bob Dylan and later carved their place in American roots and rock music with such legendary tunes as "Ophelia" and "The Weight." Helm more recently battled throat cancer, but roared to a comeback, fueled by the Midnight Rambles and marked by a 2008 Grammy win for "Dirt Farmer."

According to a press release, "'Electric Dirt' again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land and those who live by it and at the same time goes deeper and fuller in painting a musical canvas by incorporating some gospel, blues and soul with a wide range of original compositions and eclectic cover songs."

“Our objective here was to take the honesty, innocence and purity of the ‘Dirt Farmer’ record, which represents a true element of what Levon is all about, but also expand on that and explore deeper the goldmine of Levon’s musical artistry,” Campbell said in the statement announcing "Electric Dirt."

Helm will perform Thursday at a special, sold-out evening of entertainment that radio and television personality Don Imus is hosting at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connectictut. Helm will also host his next Midnight Ramble house concert Saturday, with opening band The Organiks. Rambles are also scheduled for April 25 and each Saturday in May.

Helm will also perform at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado June 13; Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Okla., June 16; and the Walton Arts Center in Fayeteville, Ark., June 18.
