Lackluster bonus material that could have probably fit onto just one disc + high price = same old shitty "deluxe" treatment.

Black Sabbath have nothing to do with these releases and Tony Iommi's strong desire not to have any unreleased material will prevent these from having any real bonus tracks just your typical alternate mixes and such. I'm an enormous Sabbath diehard but I could care less about these and the prices are ridiculous. also, it is highly unlikely these will be from the original master tapes. Rhino/ Warner Bros. owns those and they sound beyond amazing. These are probably from the Castle/Sanctuary remasters and will not sound anywhere near as good and most likely will have the same flaws.

It is looking like the Paranoid reissue is now released without the SACD or DVD Quad mix.It is listed at HMV UK as only 2 discs and CD universe has it listed as unavailable. What a shame.

They're putting more time into the repackaging than the band did on recording the original albums.

These reissues do not inspire the repurchase thing for me. I'll stick with my Castle remasters.

You are mistaken. The original master tapes are in the UK. Warner Bros. is a perpetual licensee for the U.S.A.. Universal, present day owner of Sanctuary(successor to Castle, who bought NEMS, who had licensed the first 6 albums to both Vertigo & Warner Bros.) has the original master tapes, at least for the released recordings. Several of the 1996 Castle Essential UK remasters had photos of the master tapes boxes in their booklets, establishing that they had the original master tapes.

I've been on the Sabbath mailing since the mid 90's, and the latest issue was sent to me today. Included was this item about the remasters. I know for a fact in 2002 when Rhino/Warner Bros. began the reissues that those were the first time the original master tapes had been used. I have the Castle ones from 1996 and they are not the same-not even close. Now, maybe with the merger these new releases are from the original masters but not the 1996 CDs-no way. And, those had plenty of flaws which have been detailed meticulously on the mailing list over the years. By the way, these bonus tracks look completely useless. Apparently Bill Ward is the only member promoting these as I'd assume the others could care less, with Ozzy working on his new album and Sabbath with Dio about to promote theirs. Also, we've been informed through the list that it looks like more albums will follow but unlikely they will be of the 2 and 3 CD variety. As always, I thank Joe Seigler for his awesome Sabbath site and info. As a Sabbath freak, I'm afraid some day I may cave in and get these, but for now they're too expensive and I just can't fork over $40 to hear "Weevil Woman", that ever-important "jocular banter" and Tony Iommi's alternate cough.
TWO MORE BLACK SABBATH EXPANDED DELUXE REISSUES DUE
Following the release of the expanded Paranoid set, Universal issue a further two classic Black Sabbath albums in the Deluxe format with an additional cd of goodies.
Black Sabbath
CD 1 1. Black Sabbath 2. The Wizard 3. Behind The Wall Of Sleep 4. N.I.B. 5. Evil Woman, Don't Play Your Games With Me 6. Sleeping Village 7. Warning
CD 2 1. Wicked World 2. Black Sabbath Minus Rain and with Alternative Lyrics 3. Black Sabbath Instrumental 4. The Wizard With Jocular Banter 5. Behind The Wall Of Sleep With "Dry" Vocal 6. N.I.B. Alternative Mix 7. Evil Woman, Don't Play Your Games With Me With Horns & Flute 8. Sleeping Village Alternative Mix 9. Warning Part 1
Master Of Reality
CD 1 1. Sweet Leaf 2. After Forever 3. Embryo 4. Children Of The Grave 5. Orchid 6. Lord Of This World 7. Solitude 8. Into The Void
CD 2 1. Weevil Woman 2. Sweet Leaf Demo 3. After Forever Instrumental 4. Children Of The Grave Alternative Lyrics 5. Children Of The Grave Instrumental 6. Orchid With Tony Iommi's Cough and Count In 7. Lord Of This World With Piano and Slide Guitar 8. Solitude Alternative Version With No Flute 9. Spanish Sid Early Version of "Into the Void"

But my Castle remasters had a sticker on the shrinkwrap saying that they were from the "original master tapes." A record company wouldn't lie!

As for the 1996 Castle remasters, while I don't know what sources were used for the Dio-era material, I'm puzzled about why some of you are challenging the idea that Castle's 1996 discs of the early Ozzy Osbourne-era albums are taken from the original master tapes. The booklets for "Black Sabbath", "Paranoid" & "Master of Reality" show photos of the master tape boxes, leaving no doubt. Yes, the photos are small, but look at them under a magnifying glass. These tape boxes describe the contents as "Master" or "Masters UK".

Phil, besides remembering what was described on the Sabbath mailing list when the first Rhino 2CD comp came out "Symptom Of The Universe: The Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978" in 2002 that these were the real deal, just go back and listen to the 1996 Castle remasters-it's not even close, I don't know about pictures of things saying otherwise, but a photo does not equal what was really used sonically. I also have the Castle boxset "Under Wheels Of Confusion" and that has the same remasters from 1996 and they sound nothing like the Rhino remasters. Just sayin' that's all. I sincerely hope that these upcoming remasters are from those same tapes. As I said before, I would imagine that could now be the case since Universal took over.

Tricky Kid wrote: Some supplemental reading regarding the 1996 Castle releases... some of the anomalies suggest that perhaps something other than true master tapes were used in at least some cases. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Ba ... 3/sv06.htmThat Leonid fellow was the original runner of the Sabbath Mailing List and he knows so much about sound and mastering it's ridiculous. All of those comments were on the old mailing list back in the late 90's and they are as I remembered them. And this just proves even further that the Castle releases were better at the time, but not actually from the original masters. In some cases there were some good remasters done by Castle (I think "Master Of Reality", Vol. 4", "Eternal Idol" and "Mob Rules" sound very good), but most had some flaws, in some cases minor, in other cases significant. Regardless, they aren't from the original master tapes and the Rhino CDs are and sound so much better it's not even close. It is possible that Castle purported to have the original master tapes at the time and had those photos that Phil mentioned, but they were not telling the truth and that was later proven to be true when the original master tapes were discovered and used in 2002. If these Universal releases are using the original tapes, then I admit, I might be in for these but not at silly prices. I hope they do the whole catalogue or at the very least, the Warner Bros. releases through 1987.

Believe me, from the days of reading ICE and reading stuff about various CD incarnations, we know that the labels take a lot of liberties with the term "master tapes." Suddenly, the "true master tape" was discovered or the previous release that was thought to have been mastered from the "original master tape"...wasn't. One thing I don't get about Rhino: Last year, they issued The Rules Of Hell boxset with the Dio-era Sab albums. Shortly afterwards, the CDs in that set were issued individually. Why hasn't Rhino done the same with the Black Box remastered CDs from the Ozzy era??

Ward seems to have difficulty organizing his thoughts. Perhaps a bit too much partying in the heyday of Black Sabbath?

Ward has said in the past that he doesn't remember the recording of one of their albums at all. I believe it was either Heaven And Hell or Born Again. He definitely did some damage back in the day.
