Cool looking album covers. Never heard of 'em. Are they some sort of prog band? Just a guess from the album covers and song titles.

Camel is one of the classic progressive bands from the 70's and early 80's. I had a marketing professor in college ('78) turn me on to Camel. The first eight albums are in my opinion the best. I believe the band retired a few years back and no longer record or tour. They never received the awareness they deserved, but then again they would not be alone in that category.

"Lady Fantasy" from Mirage is one of my favorite progrock epics. The vocals on this vintage video are a little flat, but you'll get the idea.

I only know a little by them (including their minor US hit "Another Night"), they had a cult following here in the States and put 5 albums (including these three) on the lower rungs of the charts (as well as one that bubbled under). I know Andy Ward the drummer briefly played with Marillion but was kicked out because of drinking problems which forced them to cut short their US tour in 1983. I think Phil Collins guested on an album or two as well.
These look nice, but I'd have to hear more of Camel's music (not sure if I'll dig the vocals)-guess I'm headed to You Tube!

I used to have a lot of their albums; I still have "Rain Dances", "Breathless" and "Nude". "Rain Dances" has Brian Eno guesting on a track or two, and bass player Richard Sinclair (Caravan, Hatfield & The North, etc.) shares lead vocal duties, which is a big plus. I still have the 2-CD best of compilation "Echoes" and "Snow Goose", too, but they're in the "sell" box. Camel just always seemed like a watered-down Genesis-Pink Floyd wannabe to me. Latimer and Bardens were great musicians, but lacked an original sound, and there was no trace of an "edge" to their music.

If you only can get one, get "The Snow Goose". When released in 1975 it was voted one of the top 5 albums of the year in Melody Maker, a British mag. This album just gets better with age. The late great Peter Bardens on keyboards and Latimer on guitar showcase an excellent band. If you love Floyd, you will love this!

I intend to get all 3 personally!

Rick A.

PS Probably will get them from the UK since they will be less expensive as discussed in other threads on these Deluxe editions.

Right now Amazon UK is selling the new "Rain Dances" remaster for the equivalent of $3.74 American dollars!

Rick,

As a collector of British Prog I'm a fan of Camel and have many of their early albums, Mirage,The Snow Goose,Moonmadness,Rain Dances and Breathless. The later stuff where Phil Collins guested, I Can See Your House from Here,I wouldn't touch as I'm not admirer of his later Genesis period vocals or his 80s solo stuff.I'm not even sure whether he sang or just played drums on that album, let's just say I wouldn't go there.

Richard Sinclair does share some vocals with Andy Latimer starting with Rain Dances.Without checking this must have been his next move after Hatfield and The North's "The Rotters Club".If anything I think his voice takes some getting used to because his singing style IMHO is so peculiar and matter of fact that it's bland.I agree that Camel were second rung prog in popular perception compared to Genesis or Pink Floyd, but still prefer them even to the early Genesis output. There is quite a similarity with Caravan with the woodwinds, although the Pete Bardens keyboards use more strident syncopated rhythms than the more sepentine organ style of the early Dave Sinclair-era Caravan.Andy Latimer's soaring guitar is also superb particulary this track from Moonmadness.

The Snow Goose album IMHO is not as good, but famous for Rhayader.

The album "Breathless" was perhaps their most commercial, although not yet present by the look of it in this current reissue program. It has a far more pop focus.

I would re-consider selling if I were you.

I ordered mine last Thursday. It came in today's mail. Five days. From the UK.

Meanwhile, I placed an order with Borders.com last Friday and it's still "in-process." All the items were in stock. No shipping notification yet.
