From Billboard.com:

Experience Hendrix expects to release two albums later this year, including one on its Dagger "bootleg" imprint, which is sold only through its Web site. Hendrix also expects to release CDs and DVDs this fall that showcase live performances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience at London's Royal Albert Hall, as well as behind-the-scenes footage.

When Hendrix performed February 18 and February 24, 1969, at Royal Albert Hall, a camera crew followed him for a month, yielding candid footage of him at home, about town and hanging out backstage. The result, Hendrix says, will be a "reality TV" glimpse of the legendary guitarist.

...the artist's recording catalog appears poised to continue expanding, with Hendrix noting that Experience Hendrix has "10 more years of Hendrix music" in the vaults.

"Currently, I am in the studio transferring tapes of Band of Gypsys performances that have never been released before," she said, referring to Hendrix's last band.

Don't hold your breath, they release material at a snail's pace. "this year" could mean December.

I still doubt that Janie Hendrix will unfreeze the halt on releases of previously unreleased material to stores. The last CD of previously unreleased material released to stores was "Live at Berkeley,2nd Show" in September 2003. These days, Experience Hendrix is mainly a lawsuit factory, and usually, the people that they sue never pay the(court ordered) damage awards......so Janie Hendrix & Co. are only wasting money on lawyer fees.

Yeah Phil, I can't understand that. EH's unwillingness to release material is actually encouraging me to buy from the gray market, a market I would gladly avoid if EH could get its shit together and put out more than one release per year.

Don't they (Experience Hendrix) put out a press release every few months saying that they have something new coming? I, like Technophallus, am totally disappointed by what they've put out recently. Most of their Hendrix releases have been booted so many times already or they've been released in dubious form on Purple Haze or Retroactive. It's tiring buying the same thing over again. I wish EH would be proactive and start putting out stuff that hasn't been warmed over a few times!

This wouldn't be so bad if we had several releases each year to choose from, but at this rate you know it's going to be years before you get what you want.

The pessimist in me thinks this means we will see a slew of "deluxe" reissues that pointlessly repackage perfectly fine editions of his albums and throw in an arbitrarily selected handful of bonus tracks.

I would actually consider buying the 5 or 6 main albums for the 10th or 11th time if we'd get decent sound quality. The most recent batch of US EH remasters are horribly bright.

Hmmm...

Given that the Last Experience film is probably the ugliest and saddest of all the Hendrix legal f***-ups over the years, does anyone feel like me, and think that this ISN'T the release we are all waiting for?

Nowhere in this press release do I read or sense the triumphant release of the best unreleased Hendrix performance movie ever - reading between the lines, I see a CD release of RAH (the Estate does actually own the audio) plus some sort of "backstage and personal" DVD, without any actual performance footage from the two shows.

Or am I just being paranoid...?

I mentioned in the other thread on this (we might want to combine the 2), that the UK Charly 3 cd box set of RAH is very well done if you can find one.

I was involved as a consultant in the Charly 3-CD set, but the company never sent me a copy of the finished product, though I have CD-R's of the recordings as they stood before mastering. My role was to confirm that the recordings were actual Royal Albert Hall material. A previous RAH set from Charly was taken from a source which contained some Berkeley & Winterland material which Charly had no right to use. The supplier of the material had tricked Charly.

Charly's release of Royal Albert Hall is legitimate, licensed by the owners of the unreleased film.

Bites that they didn't send you one!

Looks like the "unreleased" Band of Gypsys material on the Dagger label will be soundboard quality recordings of Fillmore East concert performances that, up until now, have only been available through fairly decent audience tapes. The Royal Albert Hall film will be 105 minutes long and it appears that it will be more of a documentary than a concert film per se.

All indications are that EH has the raw material filmed by Steve Gold & Jerry Goldstein. This includes pro shot footage of the 1/69 shows in Strasbourg, Vienna, Berlin, 2/18 RAH, 2/24 RAH show, RAH soundcheck(s), the Speakesy after hours jam and lots of backstage and offstage footage. All of this save for the heavily edited poor quality 2/24 RAH footage is unseen footage. This lot includes the only know pro live footage of Come On, Tax Free and Little Wing.

I'm not sure what EH will do but I'm sure at the very least we will get the 2/24 show on DVD (probably blu-ray as well) in far more complete and better quality than before. EH has tried to get this stuff out for ages. I wouldn't be so quick to point the finger at EH for the non-release of this material. There is plenty of evidence that the other party involved isn't that easy to deal with.

Don't be so sure of that. Think about it. They released near-complete DVD's of Woodstock and IOW. No way RAH won't get the same treatment. I'm sure we will get the complete or near-complete RAH show on DVD/blu-ray + material from the other concerts and off stage stuff.

Really?? If true and they finally HAVE sorted something out with Gold/goldstein, I'd take back all my cynicism about this - it'd have the raw potential to be the best new Hendrix release over the last 10/20/30 years.

Until more info materialises, I'll keep my fingers tightly crossed...

I have it on pretty positive authority that the Royal Albert Hall DVD has been pushed back to sometime in 2010. Market studies have probably shown too much product competition for the upcoming Christmas market, or something else having to do with not being able to realize top dollar. Anyway, I'm sure Jimi would have wanted it that way. He was all about the money---art and creativity be damned!

I don't understand how grey-market companies can continue to release live shows at a profit (they would stop if they weren't making money) and EH can't muster a couple releases per year.

When I order the new Dagger release, the woman on the phone told me to expect Royal Albert Hall material by December of this year. We'll see.
