Mark Ronson begins work with Duran Duran
Mark Ronson has started work on the new Duran Duran record, and tells NME.COM it’s their best material in 15 years.
Ronson went into the studio with the band on Wednesday (March 18) and says it’s already going so well that he hopes to do the full album.
“Today we started a song, and it has to be my favourite Duran Duran song in at least 15 years,” he said. “We made this beat, this backing track, and I was like ‘why don’t you guys start jamming over it?’, and all of a sudden its like instant Duran Duran. Just add water, you know?”
A fan of the band’s since childhood, the producer says he was apprehensive at the prospect of working with the Brit legends.
“I was so nervous the night before, I’m always like that the night before every project, like ‘this is the one they’re going to figure out I’m a fraud’. But I’m such a fan that I know what a Duran Duran fan would want to hear. It’s going so well at this point, I’d like to do half a record, maybe a whole record with them.”
He says that despite their longevity, Duran Duran are still very much in touch with what’s happening currently in the music scene.
“They’re at a point in their career where they could just accept lifetime achievement awards and play a few festivals but they actually care so much about new music. They have an impeccable knowledge about old really cool avant-garde stuff but they’re really up on their shit. They’ll talk to you about TV On The Radio and Klaxons, and they’re not just saying it to be trendy, they’re actually really into it. I feel like there’s a lot of bands especially now that are really indebted to them, I’m sure Brandon Flowers and all these people would be the first to say it.”

Kaiser Chiefs collaborate with Duran Duran
Kaiser Chiefs’ drummer and songwriter Nick Hodgson has written a number of songs with Duran Duran for their new album.
The band are currently in the studio with Mark Ronson, who invited Hodgson in to work with Le Bon and co.
“I called Nick a week ago and asked if he’d be interested in coming to work with Duran Duran and write a song” Ronson told NME.COM. “He’s never done that before, because he only writes with Ricky and his own band, but I thought it made a lot of sense because there’s a lot of Kaiser Chiefs songs I could imagine being on a Duran Duran record 25 years ago.”
The producer says Hodgson worked with the band for “five or six hours”, and they wrote three songs together:
“One is quite rocky, one is more Italo disco” he says. ”Two of them I would definitely say are making the record.”
Ronson will work on the record until the end of this week. He will then return to New York, where he will perform at the launch of Topshop next week.

Duran Duran will release their 13th studio album, All You Need Is Now, as a 9-track digital LP exclusively on the iTunes Store on December 21st
An expanded physical LP and various format special packages will come in February 2011. The first single from the record, title track "All You Need Is Now," will be available worldwide on December 14th exclusively on the iTunes Store.
Produced by the Grammy Award-winning Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen) and mixed by Spike Stent (Madonna, Björk, No Doubt), the record is a return-to-roots homage to Duran Duran's most celebrated musical panache.
Before the band embarks on their Spring 2011 world tour to promote the album, they are headed to South Africa on December 7th for a 5-date concert series marking the first time in seventeen years the band has played in Africa.
Selling over 80 million records over their three-decade career, Duran Duran certainly has a storied history, but this new tale begins in 2008. As part of a year-long run, they headlined festivals in a number of countries, playing arenas in others, and became the first group to perform at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Two nights later, in the same city, Duran Duran treated fans to a specially created "mega-mix" one-hour set that was filmed in a tiny theatre, with long-time-fan, Mark Ronson.
This rare live performance, immediately proved that there was a powerful chemistry between Ronson and the band, and within just a few weeks, a much larger collaboration had developed, with Mark committing to produce the band's 13th studio album.
Starting out in the late Spring of 2009, at Sphere Studios in London, this much-anticipated Duran/Ronson union flourished, as writing and recording began on an exciting new body of work, which Ronson has boldly stated is the "imaginary follow up to Rio that never was."
All You Need Is Now digital LP tracklisting in full:
1. All You Need Is Now 2. Blame The Machines 3. Being Followed 4. Leave A Light On 5. Safe 6. Girl Panic 7. The Man Who Stole A Leopard 8. Runway Runaway 9. Before the Rain
*A 12-track physical package will be available for purchase on CD and vinyl with special deluxe options in February 2011.

"The Imaginary follow up to Rio that never was." That would be incredible.
Ronson has the reputation and chops to actually make it possible but I'm skeptical as long as Andy's not in the band. A main reason I believe he's gone is because he 's never been on track with the direction Simon and Nick want to take the band. I would think a "follow up to Rio" would be more in the direction Andy would want to go – Simon and Nick would go in a techno/pop/dance direction. We'll see.

New Romantic wild boys Duran Duran are set to return to their glory days this coming year with the release of their 13th album, All You Need Is Now. The album was produced by Amy Winehouse producer and recent solo artist Mark Ronson. Keyboardist Nick Rhodes enthused to Spinner, "It's the best record we've made in over two decades." But Rhodes didn't stop there. He also announced that the band would approach the material as they had back in the days of Rio, with plenty of well-produced videos. "One thing I can say is that we will be making videos for every track on the album, which is something we certainly haven't done since the very beginning. We feel that visual material and content now is actually becoming of value again," he said, citing Lada Gaga and Kanye West as artists who have made music videos interesting again for the first time in ages. Rhodes also promised fans the chance to see the band in the flesh. "We're going to be touring next year for sure," he said. "We haven't announced anything yet, but this record is built for touring, so we're definitely excited about that." All You Need Is Now will be available on iTunes on December 21 and will be in stores in February 2011.

Wow-the new song is pretty wild. Sounds like 80s Duran meets early 90s Duran and with modern values too. (The weird keyboard washes sound like they're straight out of Genesis's "Who Dunnit?" to me. Great song!

I heard a few songs on Rodney on the Roq a few weeks ago and I was mighty impressed. So much so that they are the band I look forward to the most at this year's Coachella.
