from what i've read one will be able to buy the individual blu-ray/DVD/CD's should you choose to do so.

however, "journey through the past will NOT be on CD, only on DVD.

of course that could change, as could the track listing, the release date, the format, etc etc etc.

This is very, very disappointing. Most of us already have Discs 5 and 7. Of the remaining 6 audio discs I count at least 35 common, easily available tracks. WTF? $200 for 50 or 60 unreleased tracks and a movie?I have always been under the impression that this entire project would focus on PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED material. I don't need copies of songs from Harvest, After The Goldrush, etc., nor do I think ANY of the target audience for this set. What a huge waste. Neil had a chance to really do something special and he's blown it every step of the way. If this track listing holds up I'll be waiting to buy this second hand.

I'm also on the fence about this one. I'm not one of these people who has five versions of a particular CD and I really don't want to buy so much stuff that I already have.

This raises a question. Will this be available on a track-by-track basis for download via the usual suspects, iTunes, amazon.com, et. al?

My guess is yes, though it's only a guess at this point. The individual discs are going to be available for purchase separately, according to Neil's site, so it only makes sense that the tracks would also be available separately. Oh, wait. Hold on. "Makes sense" and Neil Young don't really go together do they, so who knows.

I thought it was supposed to be a collection of previously unavailable tracks, not a massive greatest hits comp. Well, after all the waiting and anticipation I can say I will not be buying this. What a let down, even by Neil Young standards.

"Neil Young standards", by definition, leave no room for a let down. There is absolutely nothing between what a rational person would expect from Neil and a strong kick in the nuts. It's like dividing by zero.

Neil Young Archives Gets June Date
Posted March 23, 2009 09:59 AM by Josh Dreuth

According to the man himself, 'Neil Young: Archives Volume One' will hit store shelves on June 2nd, day-and-date with both the DVD and CD releases. Pegged as more of a biography than a box set, this 10-disc set covers 10 years of the artists life, including previously unreleased songs and personal notes from the legendary singer/song writer.

The specifics have yet to be detailed, but we do know there will be roughly 30 hours of material, some of which available for the very first time to fans. Stay tuned as we expect to hear more soon.

I'm quite curious to know how they come up with 30 hours of material based on the tracklisting above. Am I missing something here?

What's with the "first pressing", "second pressing", etc. Did he redo all those songs on different pressings of the same LP?

I guess the rumors of a treasure trove of unreleased songs was unfounded myth. Instead the "new" material it's mostly unreleased versions of previously released songs.

If I absolutely loved Neil Young but somehow never bought a single Neil Young record from before 1972, this would be a great set. But as I own just about all his records from before 1972 (and very little since) I'll be picking up disc 00 and the DVD.

As long as the discs are available seperatly i'll get a few. You would think that a DVD or BlueRay can hold more than 14 or 15 songs????

We are just about to the point where people like me ususally pull the trigger on their pre-orders and get them out of the way. I always do mine a month before release date. I have to tell you all that the decison making process concerning which format of Neil's Archives Vol.1 set has driven me absolutely apeshit.
After a lot of thinking about it, I'm likely to put in for the CD set to start. I'm really angry that quite a bit of this is already out on various other discs. We also have two sets in the package that Neil already released prior to this thing coming out. On top of it, as much as I would love to hear 5.1's of a good chunk of this early material, this is music from the days when two-channel ruled the day. I"m also not certain that the video content is going to be enough to spend the extra nearly $100.00. The standard DVD appears to be the most risky proposition to me. If and when I get a Blu-ray system, then I'll invest in the Blu-ray version.
The planning of this first box set and the promotion as well has been one of the biggest fiascos I've ever witnessed for a major release. There should be no duplications whatsoever in the next set. And for the sake of the fans who will not be able to invest in a Blu-ray system, WB/Rhino should seriously consider making a separate release for all of the future goodies that Neil says will be incorporated into the Blu-Ray discs. Video should go to a standard DVD and any unreleased audio music should go onto CD's for those of us who aren't going to be making the the leap into new technology anytime soon.
I'm not very happy with Neil or WB. This could have turned out so much better and so much more clear as well. Lay it down and lay it out there for people to understand clearly. I also wish the releases could have been parcelled out in smaller portions and in a more logical fashion.
I'm a music fan. I'm very seriously into music and consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person. But the way this whole project has been handled has let even a music veteran of reissues like myself totally confused and perplexed throughout this whole process. Neil and WB need to streamline and simplify this series.
Before the weekend is over, if anybody has any new information which would suggest to me that I should get the standard DVD over the CD, then tell me. It just seems, for now, that the CD box is what I'm going to invest in.

it looks like i will be picking and choosing form the indvidual release list on CD. i already have 2 of the CD's (like most neil young fans) and there are couple of them that i really don't care if i have or not.

looks like the completist in me will not include neil young any longer. :(

Yes, me too. The only one I'm definitely in for is disc 3.
