Yesterday's USA Today reported that the Director's Cut of the 40th Anniversary Edition of Woodstock will be coming out June 9th in both standard DVD and Blu-ray. There are artists who were not in the original film who will be on the new edition. Surprisingly, they are going to inlclude footage of The Grateful Dead among others. Federico can confirm this, but member so the band and a lot of fans have felt that this wasn't supposed to be one of their greater gigs they ever did. I'm still happy for the addition. It'll let people decide for themselves and maybe it wasn't as bad as some people would make it out to be.

I'm shocked if this is true. I've heard part of the show. I haven't listened to the whole thing. It's not quite as bad as the band has claimed but it is not great. Mostly it sounds like they are distracted, which they were. You can stream it here: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1969-0 ... .6103.shnfWhat surprises me is that they would allow the release. I am sure it is worse in their minds than it is on tape. But that's the point. They probably haven't heard it since they performed it live and given the way that they perceive the appearance it would seem to me that they would sit on what they remember as an abysmal performance.

Well, they'll probably just put in one song, the best performance they can find, so they are documented. What about CCR, weren't they there as well? Is there anybody else missing from the previous directors cut?

However, they did not appear in the subsequent film and were not included on the original soundtrack album(s). I don't know whether CCR (or any others M.I.A. from the orginal film) will be added. We can only hope.

I saw a little of this on VH1 the other night and remembered why I've never been able to watch it again. It's not letterboxed and whenever they do a split screen (a lot) the players are all either in the corners or offscreen all together. Many shots of Joe Cocker's microphone standing by itself. I wouldn't mind seeing it again letterboxed, though.

I wonder if we're going to get the full "Lovelight." It runs darn close to 40 minutes.

Still no footage from The Incredible String Band ? Why? I have a boot of that section of the show and it's awesome !
I hope the entire Who show will come out one of these days.
Mountain were also great.
More CSN & Y footage?
I guess beggars can't be choosers.

Oops, wait a minute. Amazon's listings APPEAR to state that the "bonus disc" will only be on blu-ray. If so..... I won't be buying it! The only justification I have for picking this up is what Pip's post calls "DVD Contents – Disc Three:" However, Amazon shows the Blu ray as a 3 disc & the dvd as a 2 disc. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NXDSLQ/?tag=imwan-20There's also a HUGE price difference: Blu Ray $62.99 DVD $22.49

Not sure how that relates to what's going to be on the dvd edition?

Why bother buying this at all. We just get screwed by greedy record companies. I have had a gut-full of being treated like an idiot by record companies. The Doors Box Set was one example. $200+ then $150 then $90. Woodstock festival of August 1969 has been milked for years. I also have all the CDs and DVDs of this magnificent music milestone but I am getting real sick of the way we are forced to buy something just to get a few unreleased songs. That's all i'm saying..........

I just got a hold of part of the Grateful Dead segment. Dark Star is actually pretty good, other then some out of tune guitars.

I remember Jerry Garcia saying that the atmosphere at Woodstock was so charged that they intentionally played a very quiet mellow set because they thought that was what the crowd needed. Does that jibe with what you've heard?

I don't think they were paying much attention to the crowd. The wind was howling, the stage was drifting, the amps were poorly grounded and they were being shocked by their guitars. And the helicopter radios would periodically broadcast through the PA (Spinal Tap anyone?). I think they were just trying to make it through the performance.

Pip wrote: I remember Jerry Garcia saying that the atmosphere at Woodstock was so charged that they intentionally played a very quiet mellow set because they thought that was what the crowd needed. Does that jibe with what you've heard? Pip, I suspect Federico knows alot more about that then I do! I'm a big fan, but nowhere near an expert. Having played it a couple times, parts are actually not that bad. I am NOT a Pigpen fan, but other then the stoned idiot who takes over the mike a few times, this may be my favorite Turn On Your Love Light ever. Dark Star is also not bad, though nowhere near their best. There are issues with badly out of tunes guitar on a couple songs, & we won't discuss Garcia's voice on Hightimes....... But since Lovelight is over 1/2 of the set, this definitely is nowhere near as bad as legend would have it.

From Yahoo/Billboard: IMO, The key line here is [lilred]"Rhino Records will roll out new albums of Woodstock performances"[/lilred]
Woodstock co-founder seeks sponsors for 2009 edition
By Gary Graff Gary Graff – Sat Mar 21, 4:20 pm ET
AUSTIN, Texas (Billboard) – Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang says plans for a 40th anniversary concert are "all speculative ideas" for now, but he hopes to bring them to reality this summer.
Lang told Billboard.com that his vision is "a free event ... a very green project," possibly in New York City.
"We want to have as small a carbon imprint as we can and use as many green techniques as we can," said Lang, who was in Austin to participate in a South by Southwest panel discussion on the legendary 1969 concert.
The holdup? "It's got to be sponsor-driven," he said.
"It's free, but it costs a lot of money. That's kind of what we're in the middle of right now. Depending on how successful we are in raising that sponsorship (money) will determine when and how we do this event -- or if we do this event, frankly."
He added that reports of a concurrent Woodstock festival in Berlin, possibly at Tempelhof airport, were "premature."
Lang said that musically a 2009 Woodstock would go "back to its roots ... There would be a lot of legacy bands -- the Who, Santana, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joe Cocker maybe. And it would be people like Steve Earle and Ben Harper. There's certainly room for the (Red Hot) Chili Peppers and Dave Matthews ... That would be the shape of the music."
The Chili Peppers, of course, closed the ill-fated 30th anniversary concert in 1999, which was marred by complaints about the facilities, food and water prices and ended with a fiery riot. But Lang said he's confident that the Woodstock brand is not permanently damaged.
"I think it always hearkens back to the '69 event, somehow," he said. "When people think (of Woodstock) they don't think '99 or '94. They think (of) the '69 event. I think (1999) has its ramifications, but I don't think it did any real damage in that sense."
With or without concerts, Woodstock's 40th will be celebrated with an array of projects this year. Lang has written a book in collaboration with Holly George-Warren that will be published in August. He's also working on a VH1 documentary with filmmaker Barbara Kopple.
On June 9, meanwhile, Warner Home Video will release a four-hour director's cut of the film "Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music," featuring 18 new performances, including some by five groups -- Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, Johnny Winter, Mountain and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band -- that did not appear in the original film. Rhino Records will roll out new albums of Woodstock performances.
And director Ang Lee has made "Taking Woodstock," a narrative feature film about the real estate agent who helped the 1969 festival move to Bethel, N.Y., after losing permission to hold it in nearby Wallkill.
